Lester Jerome Powell, Sr.

LESTER JEROME POWELL died Sunday, January 29, 2017 in his home in Lawrenceville, NJ, after a long battle with Huntington's Disease. Lester grew up in Philadelphia, where he was raised by his grandparents, Earline Dean and William Quarles. Lester moved to New Jersey in 2003 where he later dedicated his life to the Lord and was baptized at Beloved Community in Ewing, New Jersey. Lester (E5 Sergeant) is a Veteran of the Vietnam War, where he earned several medals, including the Purple Heart and Vietnam Bronze. He served three years with distinction as a Marine in Vietnam, and received other commendations for his dedication and bravery. He was very proud to be known as a Marine, as friends and family will attest. After Vietnam, he joined the Reserves for nine years for a total of 12 years of service. Lester was an avid sports fan, always supporting the Philadelphia teams. Mr. Powell is survived by his daughters, Shannon Golson (Michael) and Stacey Powell, son, Lester Powell, Jr., five grandchildren, Ry'hana Tolliver, Kandis Powell, Amya Powell, Siraya Powell, and Riley Powell, one great grandchild, one brother, Lawrence Powell, one sister, Earline Powell, devoted caregivers, Kathi Jackson and Karen Knight, special great niece, Kayla Jackson, special nephew, Kevin Kelly, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
