YORK-Mary Ann (Sunday) Downs, 91, of York, PA went home to be with our Lord on March 4, 2021. She was born on July 21, 1929 in York, PA to the late George M. Sunday and Edna M. (Lauer) Sunday. Mary Ann attended William Penn Sr. High School where she graduated in 1947. She attended business school after high school. Mary Ann worked for the telephone company in Washington, DC where she lived with her sister Valencia M. Sunday until both sisters married. She worked for Avon for 16 years while she resided in Silver Spring, MD. Later she worked several office administrative jobs through a temporary agency. Mary Ann was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Jack I. Downs. The couple was married on November 28, 1958. The next day they left for Laramie, Wyoming where they lived briefly before returning to Silver Spring, Maryland where they lived for many years. In their retirement they moved back to Laramie, WY. In addition to her parents and husband, Mary Ann was preceded in death by her sister Valencia Sunday Hoover, and brother-in-law Frank L. Hoover, and half-brother, Paul Mummert and his wife Miriam. Mary Ann was a lifelong animal lover and especially loved having cats as pets. She volunteered at her church and supported many charities including the ASPCA. She loved to spend time with her family and to visit with her friends. She enjoyed knitting and belonged to several knitting groups over the years. She enjoyed making and donating knitted items to charity. She was a member of Shiloh UCC, was a member of Red Hat Society at Normandie Ridge, was an honorary member of Job’s Daughters Bethel #1 in York. She moved back home to York, PA after her husband’s death 18 years ago. Mary Ann was a long-time resident of Normandie Ridge Retirement Community in York. She is survived by her nephew Frank G. Hoover and his wife Joanne of Concord, NC, and her niece Laurie Hoover Brucki and her husband Richard of Ocean City, MD. She is also survived by her great nephew Taylor M. Brucki, his wife Kelsey, and their daughter, Charlotte, Mary Ann’s great, great niece; her great niece Kristen L. Brucki; and great nephew Dylan J. Brucki and wife Bonnie. A celebration of life service will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, March14, 2021 at Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., with a viewing from 2-3 p.m. Burial will be private in Greenmount Cemetery in York. The Reverend Melinda M. LaMontagne, PHD will be officiating at the service.
