James Melvin Kearney

Mr. James Melvin Kearney, known to most as “Jimmy”, passed away Saturday morning, February 27, 2021, at his residence on the very farm in which he was born. Jimmy was the son of Leon and Marie Bartlett Kearney. Following graduation from the Snow Hill High School, Jimmy continued his love of the land as his life long vocation of farming. Jimmy loved tilling the soil, planting, and watching crops grow; he was a true a farmer. As long as he was able, Jimmy loved visiting with friends and neighbors at Guevarra’s Store where the weather and farming were always mainstay topics. A member of Hull Road OFWB Church, Jimmy had served as a Trustee and was very active until his health begin to fail in recent years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Mildred Kearney Davis; and brother-in-law, Clinton Davis. Jimmy is survived by his wife of 61 years, Cora Elizabeth Harrison Kearney; daughter, Amy Elizabeth Kearney of Snow Hill; brother-in-law, Jarvis Harrison and wife, Ruth of Snow Hill; nieces, Cindy Davis, April Fields and Amanda Harper (Steve) all of Snow Hill; several great-nieces and great-nephews; and special friends, Neil and Pat Hemby of Kinston. Funeral services will be held graveside 11 AM Tuesday, March 2nd, at the Snow Hill Cemetery with Reverend Leon Grubbs and Reverend Percy Cunningham officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service and other times at the residence. Mr. Kearney will lie-in-state on Monday from 8 AM – 5 PM at Taylor-Tyson Funeral Service. In lieu of flowers, memorials are encouraged to Hull Road OFWB Church, 3984 Hull Road, Snow Hill, NC 28580. Online condolences at www.taylor-tyson.com
