Maria (Mia) Auguste Wunder Obituary

Mia Wunder passed away peacefully at the age of 88 years, with family by her side.

Mia is predeceased by her parents Theresia Visse (Rieke) and Clemens Visse, seven of her ten brothers and sisters, and is survived by her sisters Hilde and Magdi, and her brother Gustav, all in Germany.

Mom leaves behind her loving husband of 61 years, Gerhard Wunder; her children Linda (Jerry) Demchuk and Ron (Kim) Wunder; and seven grandchildren who were the love of her life: Alex, Chris, Matthew, Shelby, Daniel, Jared, and Cody.

As a young woman in 1957, Mia left her home at the family farm in Steinbeck, Germany, and made the long journey to Canada to start a new life for herself. A year later Mia met the love of her life, Gerhard, and in 1959, they married. Mia fully embraced becoming a Canadian, and in 1964 she (and Gerhard) obtained their Canadian citizenship.

Mia loved cooking and baking, spending hours in her garden, and hosting family gatherings. Oma spent lots of time with her grandkids vacationing, playing board games, and going to all of the grandkids’ events: sports games, music and theatre performances, dance recitals, and Special Olympics competitions. Oma never missed a birthday or a graduation. Whenever anyone in the family came down with a cold, Oma would make her very special “Oma’s sandwiches and soup”.

Mia traveled to many places around the world, but she always looked forward to coming home for picnics in the Alberta prairies and skiing in the beautiful Rocky Mountains. She adored her Calgary Flames, and she and Gerhard never missed a single Calgary Stampede.

The family would like to sincerely thank Dr. Norman Yee, the wonderful staff at Dulcina Hospice, and many others for their kind care of mom.

A private family service will be held at St. Luke’s Catholic Church, at a later date.

Mia/Oma/Mom, we love you and will miss you. Rest in peace knowing that your family legacy will endure. Tschüss.
