Sydnie Kate Ratzlaff Obituary

It is with deep sadness that we share the news of Sydnie’s passing. Sydnie passed away in the arms of her mother, father, and brother on Tuesday, February 16, 2021, at 27 years of age. Vibrance, compassion, and unwavering loyalty are just some of the intrinsic characteristics that defined Sydnie’s life. Born and raised in Red Deer, Alberta, Sydnie touched and influenced many with her spirited personality and zeal for life. From a young age, Sydnie excelled in both education and dance, determined to follow her heart in pursuit of her many passions and ambitions. Inspired by her own special grade 3 teacher, Betna Huddleston, and a natural gift to engage and connect with children, led Sydnie to follow in her mother’s footsteps as an elementary school teacher upon graduating high school. Two years studying Psychology at the Red Deer College led Sydnie to the University of Calgary where she completed her Bachelor of Arts Psychology degree in 2017 She then stayed on at the U of C, proceeding to earn a two-year Bachelor of Education After-Degree. Before graduating in 2020 with a 4.0 GPA, one of Sydnie’s greatest joys and accomplishments was her practicum teaching Grade 4 at st. Elizabeth Seton and Kindergarten at Holy Family School, where she was admired by students and colleagues alike. Sydnie cared deeply for the people in her life, going above and beyond to express her love and commitment to those she cherished most. Intuitive and empathetic to the needs of others, Sydnie would often go out of her way to make you feel valued and understood, placing your needs above her own. Those who knew Sydnie best also knew her fiery, passionate side - an unrelenting determination to defend those she loved most and fight for what she knew to be true. She was adored by family, friends, classmates, colleagues, students, and anyone who had the opportunity to share space with her. Sydnie was fiercely loved and will be incredibly missed. In a celebration of Sydnie’s life, a private graveside Ceremony will be held at Alto Reste Cemetery. Anyone wishing to make a memorial donation in Sydnie’s honour is asked that it be made directly to the Central Alberta Cancer Centre for the overwhelming care and support shown by staff to Sydnie throughout the last 4 years, who made her feel so safe and loved.
