Helen Schumacher
<div>Helen Schumacher (nee Helen Collins Ingle) — a lifelong New Smyrnan and beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, and wife — entered peacefully into eternal rest February 12, 2021. Our adored matriarch is survived by her large and loving family: David and Jody Ingle, and their daughters, Erin and Aimee; Terri and Robert Leonard, and their daughters, Paige and Carly; Carole and Paul Santopietro, and their daughter, Shannon; as well as her seven great-grandchildren — and a great-grandson on the way. She is predeceased by her husband, Phillip Schumacher; her sister and brother-in-law, Ruth and Bernie Vlasin; and her grandson, Jack Merton Sapp HI. </div> <div> </div> <div>A pillar of the community, Helen, born April 17,1929, was part of a small group of New Smyrna Beachresidents who could still recall Coronado Beach as an untouched and largely rural outpost of the mainland. Her family was one of the three original families with homes on the beachside and her father, Walter Collins, served as its mayor for a time. As a young woman, shebuilt her home next door to her mother on Due East and raised her three children to respect and appreciate our community, its people, and its natural beauty.</div> <div> </div> <div>They never left. And they raised families of their own who still call New Smyrna Beach home.</div> <div> </div> <div>Helen had a lifelong love for music. She was a fantastic pianist and had a gift for harmony. At the age of 12, she was asked to sing alto with the adult choir at Coronado Community United Methodist Church, and later joined a group of women known as The Sweet Adelines. Her love for the church led her to be its first</div> <div>employee — the secretary — and, as its longest serving member, a very familiar face to so many of her neighbors and friends in its congregation.</div> <div> </div> <div>It is because of this devotion — to her friends, to her passions, her community, and family — that we will miss her so dearly. Her warmth, kindness, and wry sense of humor have profoundly affected all those who knew her, and our lives will never be the same without her daily, comforting presence.</div> <div> </div> <div>A private family service will be held for Helen on Friday, February 19.
