Robert Lyons Morristown, New Jersey Obituary

Robert Lyons

Robert T. Lyons AGE: 96 Robert (Bob) Lyons, age 96 and a proud WWII Veteran of the U.S. Army, left this world quietly on February 12, 2021 from the comfort of his home and familiar surroundings. Born in Bayonne, NJ on April 5, 1924 to the late Anna Rose and William Lyons, Bob graduated from Lincoln High School in Jersey City where he was a popular student who excelled in Track and Field and was very active in acting and performance direction. He is preceded in death by the love of his life and perpetual friend, Catherine, to whom he was married 67 years. February 19th would have been their 72nd wedding anniversary. Also preceding him in death were his three older brothers, Kenneth, Homer, and William (Buddy). He is survived by his 6 children: Kevin (Kathleen), Robert, Glenn, Laura Ferraro (Marc), Thomas, and Susan; and two grandchildren, Sean and Sara. Bob was a strong and fair father who worked in partnership with Catherine to raise a large, active, and fully engaged family throughout his life. This often included attending familiar suburban activities like music recitals, Little League games, and swim meets; and driving to and from part-time jobs and college dorms. He loved his grandchildren dearly and thoroughly enjoyed their visits, particularly during holidays. While Bob was devoted to all his children equally, he was especially proud that both his daughters pursued and excelled in the performance and visual arts: one a talented musician, the other a gifted artist. After retiring from a career at AT&T, Bob volunteered alongside Catherine for over 30 years at Morristown Medical Center, which he greatly enjoyed. He became a valuable member of their volunteer corps and often referred back to his managerial days to solve problems or offer new ideas. Driven by both interest and necessity, Bob was also a talented woodworker. Soon after moving in 1965 to a new home in Morristown, he finished a bedroom and installed beautiful mahogany shelves that remained strong, level and intact right up to the day the house was sold, 40 years later. He would soon build and finish exceptional furniture that found their way into many rooms as both functional and aesthetic complements to the home’s décor. Besides Catherine and his family, Bob had several other loves, including dogs, the Jersey Shore, music, and his rose garden! Rarely were dogs not present in our home. Almost always mixed breed and of shelter origin, these dogs became quick and forever members of the family. In the early days of his marriage, Bob acquired one of the first family dogs. Toby, as she was known, unexpectedly gave birth to a large litter of irresistable puppies and Bob was tasked with finding them all homes, which he subsequently did. His love of dogs was passed down to his children who almost all now have dogs of their own. Dad also loved going to the Jersey Shore and often frequented Sea Girt and Chadwick beaches. He’d load up the family’s station wagon early on Saturday morning and head to the shore for a full day of body surfing, basking on the sandy beaches, and getting pommeled by an endless throng of incoming waves. Mom, on the other hand was a basket case there; forever worrying if the undertow would whisk her children out to sea. She counted heads constantly… Bob brushed off this fear! Music, particularly opera and symphonic composers from the Romantic Period, was always present. He had a wide collection of “LPs,” but his collection of “78s” was extensive and enviable. Bob was not only a gardener but a very specific one. He cultivated hybrid tea roses and frequently brought bouquets into his Manhattan office for his staff. He was even given access to some of the newest varieties by a national rose supplier in light of his frequent purchases and recognized knowledge. Roses will always remind us of Bob. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Church of the Assumption, Morristown on Thursday at 10:00 AM but will be open ONLY to immediate family members due to COVID considerations. However, live streaming of the Mass can be viewed via this link www.assumptionparish.org. Interment will be at Holy Rood Cemetery. Hours of visitation at the Doyle Funeral Home (www.doylefh.com) 106 Maple Ave., Morristown on Wednesday from 4 – 7PM. MASKS AND SOCIAL DISTANCING ARE REQUIRED. Room capacity restrictions will also be in place. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center < https://www.sthuberts.org/donate >
