Edmond J. Harrell

Edmond “Ed” J. Harrell, 84, of York, passed away following a lengthy illness at his home with his loving wife, Janet E. (Hinkle) Harrell by his side on Monday February 8, 2021. Edmond was born on November 11, 1936 in Buladean, Mitchell County, North Carolina and was the son of the late Wilder and Martha (Street) Harrell. He worked at several local grocery stores over the years, eventually owning the Harrell Super Thrift Grocery Store in Stewartstown. Ed also owned and operated York County Mobile Homes. He enjoyed golfing, hunting, deep sea fishing, traveling, sightseeing, working in his yard and spending time in Myrtle Beach. He was a member of Wolf’s Covenant Church, where he was a member of the consistory, cemetery board, property committee and he loved running the candy stand at the church picnics every year. Edmond was also a member of the Free Masons Lodge #649, Red Lion, the Red Lion Elks Club, the Red Lion Lions Club and the Vikings Club, York. Ed was one of thirteen children and he cherished time spent and memories made with his children, grandchildren, extended family and friends. In addition to his loving wife, Janet, Ed is survived by three daughters: Carla Chamberlain, Linda J. Harrell and Christina Harrell; two sons: David L. Harrell and his wife Zoreida and Michael E. Harrell; two sisters: Alma Briggs and Margie Sue Krom; three grandchildren: Jonathan, Hunter and Chaize Harrell; sisters-in-law: Joni (Hinkle) Warner and Sally Harrelll, numerous nieces and nephews and his loving dog Buddy. He was preceded in death by two sons-in-law: Milton “Bud” Chamberlain and Timothy Rice and seven brothers: Billy, Wilder Jr., Claude, Clyde, his twin brother Raymond, Charles and Donald Harrell; and three sisters: Georgia Bathon, Goldie Day and Elzora Greene. Ed always had a certain sparkle about him. Smart as a whip (which made him a very successful businessman and entrepreneur), he had a terrific sense of humor balanced by an unending sense of humility. Ed always said he “never met a stranger.” Due to Covid-19 restrictions, following cremation, the family will be holding a private memorial service in memory of Edmond at a later date. The services will be held under the direction of Beck Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Inc. of Spring Grove. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the staff of Heartland Hospice and Angels on Call for their loving care and support. Ed Harrell and my father, Merrell Harrell, were first cousins. As I read the obituary I found something they very much had in common. "Never met a stranger". My dad talked to everybody he met. I am sorry for our loss. Not many of that generation left. It makes me sad.
