Bernice Brand Stevens Obituary

Bernice Brand Stevens It is with heavy hearts that her children announce the death of their beloved Mother, Bernice Brand Stevens, age 93, (formerly of Springfield, Ohio) on February 1, 2021, in Navarre, Florida. Bernice was born in St. Bernice, Indiana, to the late Malinda (Langhorst) Brand and Martin G. H. Brand. She was a lifelong Lutheran. She graduated from Bethesda Nursing School in Cincinnati and became a Registered Nurse. In 1949, she married the late George T. Stevens. Together they lived in Berea, Ohio, Jamestown, New York and Springfield, Ohio. Everywhere she lived she was deeply involved in the activities of her Lutheran Churches; primarily, as a member of many Women’s Guilds/Circles. She was instrumental in developing the Joint Neighborhood Project at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Jamestown New York, and she was the Church Librarian at Grace Lutheran Church in Springfield, Ohio, for 30+ years. Bernice was always involved in her five children’s lives as a volunteer Nurse at Lake Chatauqua Lutheran Camp, a volunteer in Brownie and Girl Scouts, a volunteer librarian at Simon Kenton Elementary, and a wonderful stage mom for all of our music and stage productions in both Jamestown and Springfield. In Springfield, she was a Lifelong Member of The Young Women’s Mission and a member of the Auxiliary of Oesterlen Services for Youth. She loved to play bridge, sew, knit and crochet. Over the years in Springfield she probably knit well over 200 toddler sweaters to donate to Lutheran World Relief. Bernice is survived by their five children, Kathy (James) Moragne of Rochester, New York, Donald (Judith Silver) Stevens of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; David Stevens of Leander, Texas, Carol Stevens, with whom she shared a home, in Navarre, Florida, and Malinda (Willis) Ray of Troy, Ohio; eleven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. There will be no calling hours. Graveside services will take place at a later date in Seymour, Indiana. Lewis Funeral Home of Navarre has been entrusted with arrangements. Please consider memorials in her name or donations to Emerald Coast Exceptional Families, P.O. Box 5188, Navarre, FL 32566; Grace Lutheran Church, 1801 St. Paris Pike, Springfield, OH 45504; or Oesterlen Services for Youth Inc., 1918 Mechanicsburg Rd. Springfield, OH 45503.
