Donald H. Harvey, 84, Pontiac, died Monday, February 1, 2021 at home. Cremation rites have been accorded. Visitation will be held on Monday, February 8, 2021 from 3 to 5 pm. at Calvert & Martin Funeral Home, Pontiac. Funeral service to follow immediately after visitation. Memorials may be made to Pontiac Bible Church. Calvert & Martin Funeral Home in Pontiac are in charge of the arrangements. Donald was born January 14, 1937 to Van Clifford and Armenta Harvey. He was joined in Holy Matrimony to Valette Cruz on June 19, 1960. She survives in Pontiac. Also surviving are his four children: Randell Harvey, Chicago; Anthony Harvey, Normal; Marcia Harvey, Pontiac and Niki Harvey, Joliet; Twelve grandchildren; Tameka, Andrew, RJ, Dominique, Hillary, Ryan, Chyna, Joshua, Carl, Grace, Hailey, and Brian. Ten great-grandchildren; Mileke, Elijah, Ethan, Cameron, Alexis, Terrell, Maddie, Julian, Layla, and Jaylen; one sister Melvina Dinkins, Washington D.C.; and many close family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Larry and Homer Harvey and his sister Audrey Curtis. Donald attended Springfield Public Schools and graduated from Lamphier High School. He furthered his education earning a Bachelor’s Degree from Western Illinois University, Macomb. Donald attended Illinois State University and graduated from University of Illinois – Springfield with a Master’s Degree. Donald was widely known for his 30-year career with the Illinois Department of Corrections. Starting as a counselor and Superintendent in the Juvenile Division, he was promoted to the first black Assistant Warden in Programs – Security, at Pontiac Correctional Center. His career advanced to Internal Affairs. He became Warden after the 1978 riot at Pontiac Correctional Center. Donald finished his career in Internal Affairs. Retiring at the age of 52, Donald utilized his experience as a second security bailiff for the Livingston County Courthouse; Administrator, the Livingston County Jail, as well as teaching. Donald was an active member of the Pontiac Bible Church where he served as a Deacon and Awana Leader. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police. Donald will be remembered as our Hero. A loving, supportive husband, father, and grandfather. He walked in faith, kindness, and humility. We will miss you, your legacy lives on.
