Edward McAfee Hill, 87, “Mac” to those who knew and loved him, died on February 4, 2021 from complications of Covid-19.
The son of the late Reed Tatum and Geneva McAfee Hill, he is survived by his wife of 45 years, Mary Linda; two sons, Timothy W. Sanders (Shannon) of East Bend, NC and Paul C. Sanders (Tracey) of Virginia Beach, VA; two grandchildren, Robyn Nicole and Robert McAfee “Mac” Sanders of Virginia Beach; and a sister, Eileen Hill Ward of Mauldin, SC. He is also survived by his loved four-legged fur babies.
Mac was a graduate of Woodruff High School where he greatly enjoyed playing basketball and felt honored to play on the 1952 All-State basketball team. He was inducted into the Woodruff High School Hall of Fame.
A graduate of Gardner Webb University, Mac, in later years, assisted the library in establishing an archives website to include news clippings, documents and photos. For this achievement, he was named an Outstanding Alumni.
Mac had a fondness for journalism, especially sports writing. In 1958 he graduated from the University of South Carolina with a BA in Journalism. He enjoyed many years in the newspaper industry, having been sports editor, city editor and managing editor for several large publications, but his love was always in sports. He held offices in the SC Sportswriters Association and while at The State newspaper, he was involved in establishing the SC Sports Hall of Fame.
In his retirement years, Mac enjoyed delivering for Meals on Wheels and established a friendship with everyone he met.
No funeral service will be held at this time; however, a memorial service will take place at a later date.
Friends are invited to come by the funeral home on Monday, February 8 between the hours of 9:00 am and 4:30 pm to sign the guest register and pay their respects.
Memories and condolences may be shared with the family at www.whitakerfuneralhome.com.
Whitaker Funeral Home of Newberry is assisting the family.

Mac hired me for my first newspaper job at the Greenville Piedmont in 1977. No nicer, kinder, more reasonable -- and funnier -- person would you ever want to meet. Very sorry to hear of his passing.
