Thor W. Fjell, age 76, of Naperville, IL passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 20, 2021. He was the beloved father of Cathy Wadsworth of Ruther Glen, VA, Christy Gingerich (David) of Cary, NC, and Erik Fjell (Amy) of Springfield, MO; cherished grandfather of Daniel Wadsworth (Katie), Jessica Tompkins (Kenny), Levi, Tommy and Jonas Gingerich, Jackson (Kyra), Bryce and Caroline Fjell; dear great-grandfather of Bentley and Carson Tompkins, and Ashton Fjell; and a longtime friend to many. Thor was preceded in death by his father, Thorleif Fjell; his mother, Inga Elgeness Fjell; and his brother, Paul Fjell. Thor was the son of Norwegian immigrants. He grew up in Elmwood Park and was a 1962 graduate of Elmwood Park High School. He was a resident of Naperville for over 40 years. As a child, he was immersed in his Norwegian heritage while attending the Norwegian Lutheran Memorial Church - “Minnekirken” - with his mother, singing with his father in Normennenes Singing Society, and participating in many Syttende Mai festivities. As an adult, Thor continued to be very involved in the Chicagoland Norwegian community, serving in the following organizations: - Normennenes Singing Society - Member since 1981. Former President & VP - The Norwegian Lutheran Memorial Church - “Minnekirken”- Member - Scandinavian American Cultural Society - Member 1985 until its closing in 2000. President 1994-2000 - Norwegian Singers Association of America - Vice President at Large and Tour Director for 3 Norway concert tours, “Sangerfests” - Naperville Men’s Glee Club Charter Member - 1989-1999 - Norwood Park Nursing Home - Past Board Member 1990-1994 - Chicago Torske Club - Member - Chicago Swedish Glee Club - Member - Sons of Norway Polar Star Lodge - Member - Norwegian National League (NNL) - Member and Past Treasurer - Norwegian American Chamber of Commerce - Past Treasurer and delegate to NNL - Scandinavian Park delegate for NNL Thor was a people person. He enjoyed socializing with friends and family, celebrating Norwegian traditions, planning EPHS reunions, dinners with the EPHS Supper Club at Jim & Pete’s restaurant in Elmwood Park, singing in choruses, and traveling to Norway for concert tours and to visit beloved family. UFF DA! In light of the covid-19 pandemic, memorial services are deferred until August, 2021.
