Kenan Kurt Huber Sturgis, South Dakota Obituary

Kenan Kurt Huber

Kenan Kurt Huber, 58, of Spearfish, started his next adventure on January 27, 2021 after a 15-month battle with cancer. He passed peacefully at home with his family. Kenan was born September 18, 1962 in Belle Fourche, SD to Cletus “Fizzer” and Mary (Chaloupka) Huber. He grew up in Newell, SD and graduated high school there. He graduated from Black Hills State College with a B.S. in Business Administration. He started working in Deadwood in 1990, and his Deadwood family was important to him. It is no surprise that nearly everyone has a “Deadwood story” involving Kenan. To describe him as a constant source of amazing energy and rich laughter is an understatement. One simply couldn’t help but have a good time when Kenan was around. On September 25, 1998, Kenan married Teena Starr and they resided in Spearfish, SD throughout their marriage. The two proudest moments of Kenan’s life were the days his daughter, Kayla, and his son, Tyler, were born. They immediately captured his heart, and he was their biggest fan. Kenan was best known for a smile that lit up every room, his quick wit, and his willingness to try new adventures. He could make friends with complete strangers within seconds – his great smile and warm personality were so inviting. When Kenan wasn’t working or attending his kids’ activities, you could find him enjoying the outdoors. The cabin at Shade Hill was his favorite place on Earth, but even there he couldn’t sit still and always had to be busy. Whether it was walleye fishing, chasing pheasants, hunting big game, hiking, camping, golfing, or traveling – Kenan enjoyed life. There will never be another Kenan, but you can certainly see glimpses of him in his kids. Kenan is survived by his wife, Teena, of 22 years; his daughter, Kayla of Long Beach, CA; his son, Tyler of Spearfish, SD; four siblings, Colgan Huber (Patti Weber) of Bison, SD, Colette (Rob) Wheeler of Lemmon, SD, Kieran (Carmen) Huber of Rapid City, SD, and Creden (Kristie) Huber of Sierra Vista, AZ; and three step-siblings, Shari Kolbeck of Vermillion, SD, Joe (Ermie) Herring of Waldorf, MD, and Della (Larry) Browning of Brookings, SD. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and countless friends. Kenan was preceded in death by his parents; his step-father, Eldon Herring; and his sister-in-law, Marjean Huber. A memorial service for family members and close friends will be at 10:00a.m. on Tuesday, February 2, 2021 at Kinkade Funeral Home in Sturgis, SD. The service will be live-streamed to the funeral home’s website to allow virtual attendance. In keeping with Kenan’s personality, a Celebration of Life event is pending for this summer on the Veranda at the Franklin Hotel in Deadwood. Details will be announced at a later date. His life will always be celebrated by his family and friends; as he would have it no other way.
