Ervin Ray Taylor

Ervin Ray Taylor, 97, passed away on January 18, 2021. Ray Taylor was born on September 30, 1923 to Virginia Cherry Ray Taylor and Oliver Francis Taylor in Cheraw, S.C. Ray was a graduate of R. J. Reynolds High School. In 1942, Ray joined the Army and served his country in campaigns in New Guinea, Sol Philippines, and Manilla. Ray attended the University of North Carolina and Grinnell College. He worked at Western Electric in quality control for 35 years. In 1981, at the age of 57, he retired. Ray, as a jazz and orchestra drummer, loved music. He was an avid bridge player and loyal Tar Heel fan, but he received the most joy from his relationship with his wife of 62 years, Sara. Ray Taylor is survived by wife, Sara Bovender Taylor; son, Phillip Ray Taylor of Winston-Salem, NC; daughter, Susan Taylor Hayes, her husband, Stephen Penn Hayes and their son, Carter Penn Hayes of Richmond, VA. A private graveside ceremony will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Arbor Acres Employee Christmas Fund or to the Arbor Acres Employee Assistance Fund, 1240 Arbor Rd., Winston-Salem, NC 27104.
