Mazel "Fay" Corkal
Mazel Fay Corkal (nee Young), May 19, 1930 to January 16, 2021 “We will miss your bright eyes and sweet smile.” Fay was born in Toronto and grew up in Copper Cliff, Ontario. She was the oldest daughter of James Arthur Young and Mazel Pauline Young, (both predeceased). Sister of Dale (predeceased) (Michelle) and Rosalee Martel (Larry, predeceased). In 1949, her father reluctantly drove her out to Levack for her first teaching job. He let Fay out, looked around, and insisted she did not have to stay. But we are certainly glad she did because through her 70 years in Levack, she touched many lives. She met her husband Frank (predeceased) and they had three children, Jim (Linda), Jane (Andy McMullen) and Tom (Janice). Fay was an amazing mother and grandmother to Amanda, Jamie, Richard (predeceased), Chris and Andrea. She will be sadly missed by her sister-in-law Helen Corkal and many nieces and nephews and extended family. After Frank’s death, Fay spent much of her time with her companion Ron Roberts (predeceased) and his children and grandchildren, often at her camp on Geneva Lake. Throughout her life, Fay definitely had moxie, in other words, courage, nerve and determination. Sometimes her children and grandchildren would call this Fay’s stubbornness, but this passed on trait serves all of them well. Fay was a passionate teacher. Her field trips and involvement of the miners in Levack in her students’ education were a trademark long before the terms outdoor or experiential education came to be. Many a student thanked her years later for her guidance and encouragement, even those who didn’t recognize it at the time. Fay’s travels took her to Canada’s Far North to visit Jim and Jane, throughout the world with Frank, then Ron, and even on her own ignoring the unpopularity of a being a single woman travelling alone. Her adventures ranged from riding a camel in Morocco, hot air ballooning in Australia and watching polar bears in the wild. She was definitely an explorer and lifelong learner. There is no doubt Fay enjoyed her days in Levack, from bridge with the ladies and curling in her younger days, to reading and spending time at camp. Her teaching colleagues were also great friends; they knew how to party. Her home was always open for visits or a listening ear. She was lucky to have Tom and his family close by for most of her years, and a great bunch of neighbours that looked out for her. She stayed independently in her home and at camp until early 2019 when after a stroke, she reluctantly moved to Extendicare York. Even there she touched some lives with her eyes and smile, always willing to accept a lonely hand. Many will miss Fay in her roles of Mom, Gramma, Sister, Sister-in-Law, Aunt, and most importantly friend. Rest in peace. The family would like to thank the staff on 6th floor of Extendicare York for their kindness during her time there, and especially Tiffany and Sue (PSWs) and Derek (RN) for their support during her final days. Cremation at the Park Lawn Crematorium. Interment in the Anglican Cemetery and a celebration of her life will be held at a later date.
