Leroy Calvin, age 90 of Grinnell, entered heaven’s gates on Friday, January 15, 2021 at his home with his family by his side. A public funeral service will be held at 10:30 am on Wednesday, January 20, 2021 at the Calvary Baptist Church in Grinnell with Pastor Craig Johnson officiating. A luncheon will follow the service at the church. Burial will be in Bethel Cemetery near Lynnville. A face mask will be required for those attending the funeral service. The service will be live streamed on the Smith Funeral Home Facebook page beginning at 10:15 am. A public visitation will begin at 12:00 pm on Tuesday, January 19, 2021 at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell and the family will receive friends from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm. A face mask will be required for those attending the visitation. Memorials may be designated to the Calvary Baptist Church, Kids to Camp to Iowa Regular Baptist Camp in Clear Lake, Iowa, mailed in care of the Smith Funeral Home, PO Box 368, Grinnell, Iowa 50112. Wilburn Leroy Calvin was born on December 30, 1930 in Hartsburg, Missouri to Ira Turner Calvin and Clara Belle (Rippeto) Calvin. He was raised near Hartsburg and graduated with the class of 1949 at Ashland High School in Ashland, Missouri. Leroy was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart, Doris Louise Edwards on June 20, 1952 in Ashland, Missouri. The couple was blessed with three daughters, Teresa, Sharon and Gina. They resided in Ashland, Missouri until 1967, when General Telephone Company transferred him to Grinnell, Iowa. He was a long-time employee of over 36 years at GTE. Leroy held a very strong faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Leroy and Doris were active members of the Calvary Baptist Church in Grinnell, where he taught Sunday School over 60 years, and was a deacon and leader in the church. He dearly loved his family and enjoyed attending his family many activities. His hobbies and enjoyments were watching St. Louis Cardinals baseball, gardening, playing board games, hosting many people in their home, and volunteering at Iowa Regular Baptist Camp. Leroy will be remembered as a wise, dependable, faithful man of God, who loved his family. Leroy is survived by his wife of 68 years, Doris Calvin of Grinnell; three daughters, Teresa (Brian) Thompson of Grinnell, Sharon (Rod) Boggess of Grinnell, and Gina (Torey) DeFalco of St. Maries, Idaho; 14 grandchildren; 30 great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; and siblings, Shirley Nichols of Ashland, Missouri, and Mitchell (Gail) Calvin of Ashland, Missouri. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Leon Calvin; and brother in-law Harold Nichols.
