Joan Marie Weber

<p>Joan M. Weber, age 89, of Madison, Wisconsin, passed away at St. Mary&rsquo;s Care Center on January 8, 2021.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>She was born on August 4, 1931 in Wausau to the late Walter and Florence Weber. She had two brothers (Donald and Allan) and one sister (Lois Caraway).</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>Joan grew up in Marathon City, and graduated from the University of Wisconsin Madison in 1954, with a B.S.in Medical Technology. After college, Joan became certified as Specialist in Blood Bank Technology and got a position as a medical technologist at Meriter Health Services, where she rose to section head of the blood bank department. &nbsp;&nbsp;She gave many lectures, wrote articles on blood banking, and was the first recipient of the WABB Achievement Award.&nbsp; After retiring in 1995, she devoted her time to volunteering extensively at her church, especially the choir, and traveling with her siblings and friends.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>Joan was very active in sports.&nbsp; While a teenager, she played on the girls&rsquo; high school basketball team, the Palace Clothiers baseball team, and entered many tennis tournaments.&nbsp; In fact, she won the Wausau women&rsquo;s city tennis tournament at age 16.&nbsp; She also loved to golf, bike, cross country ski, and canoe in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area.&nbsp; In addition, she really enjoyed teaching her nieces and nephews how to skate, play tennis, etc.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>Survivors include her sister, Lois Caraway, of Madison, WI, sister-in-law, Elaine Weber of Oxford, OH, eleven nieces and nephews, 18 grand nieces and nephews, 4 great grand nieces and nephews, and dear friend Trudy Freeman.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>Joan was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers, Donald and Allan, her brother-in-law, Ed Caraway, sister-in-law, Margaret Weber, and dear friends Ralph Buetow, and Ruth Dalton.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>The funeral service will be on January 21, at 11 AM at Mount Olive Lutheran Church, 110 Whitney Way, Madison, WI. &nbsp;Visitation is at 10 AM, prior to the service.&nbsp; Burial will follow on January 22 in Pine Grove Cemetery, Wausau, WI.&nbsp; Memorials can be made in Joan&rsquo;s memory to Mount Olive Lutheran Church.</p>
