Robert "Bob" Rane Chastain

Robert “Bob” Rane Chastain, age 81, was born November 3, 1939 in Leon, Iowa to Ware and Viola (Redman) Chastain and died January 12, 2021, on his family farm near Leon. Bob graduated from Central Decatur High School in 1958, were he played on a championship football team and wrestled and earned the nicknames of “Cowboy” and “Big Boy”. After high school, Bob lived briefly in San Diego, California and worked the wheat harvest before returning to work the family farm with his dad. Bob was an active cattle buyer and was a staple at many livestock sale barns throughout Southern Iowa and Northern Missouri for over 60 years. The cattle business was his lifelong love. His life philosophy followed one of his favorite quotes, “Life consists not in holding good cards, but in playing those you hold well”. Bob enjoyed life to the fullest, playing cards, golfing, bowling, reading, traveling, especially with his sisters on their annual sibling’s trip. He loved socializing, spending time with his children and grandchildren, teasing his nieces and nephews, debating politics, raising cattle, cats, and farming. Bob served two terms on the Decatur County Hospital Board and was president of the Decatur County Cattlemen’s Association. Bob earned the reputation of being a fair and honest neighbor and having some of the heaviest square bales in Decatur County. He was preceded in death by his parents; his youngest daughter, Callie Chastain on June 17, 2019; and his great grandson, Titus Utley on March 24, 2012. Bob had an interesting life and married Kathleen (Leger) in 1975. They remained great friends until his death. They were blessed with three children, Luke, Cayle and Callie. Bob is survived by his children, Vallie Kuster and husband Larry, Daniel Chastain, Luke Chastain and wife Michelle, Cayle Buckingham and husband Jason; 10 grandchildren, Dakota Jacobo, Cheyenne Thornton, Dylan Chastain, Dalton Chastain, Blaine Buckingham, Waylon Buckingham, Lily Buckingham, Jackson Heffington, Lincoln Chastain, and Hayden Chastain; seven great-grandchildren; sisters, Brenda Fulton, Linda Chastain, and Cindy Havens and husband Roy; and other relatives and friends. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
