Carl Woodrow Slifer

Carl Woodrow Slifer, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle, died January 3, 2021 due to complications of COVID pneumonia. Carl was born November 10, 1927, in Stewardson, Illinois to George and Gretta Slifer.

He was preceded in death by his parents and only brother, Dale Slifer. Carl is survived by his loving wife, Evelyn; son, Dan Slifer (Loretta); son, Rick Slifer (Paula); daughter, Suwanna Riley (Gilbert); and sister, Mary Beldon (Bill). Surviving grandchildren are Pam Hays (Jeff), Sarah Clark (James), Seth Slifer (Katherine), and Dana Royer (Chris). Step grandchildren are Jennifer Burns, Valerie Collins, Marjorie Collins. Great grandchildren are Henry and Charlie Clark, Carl Royer, and baby Slifer due this week. Step great grandchildren are Maddie Faison, Clayton Warren (Elizabeth), Gage Burns, Jacinda Burns, Gavyn Collins, Riley Rockow, Gabrell Greene, Jonathan Greene, Camron Greene, Damien Thomas (Kimberly), Mary Collins, Sean Duns, and Alexis Duns. Step great great grandchild is Lazarus Warren.

Carl graduated from Windsor High School, Illinois, in 1945 and enlisted in the US Navy. He was soon in Guam laying telephone wires for transmission of info for Japanese War Trials.

Carl met the love of his life, Evelyn while attending Business College. They married April 16, 1949. He was a devoted husband 71-1/2 years.

Carl, Evelyn and family moved to Duncan in 1956. He worked at the post office as a carrier and postal clerk. His second job was mowing grass for the Duncan community.

They joined the First Christian Church in 1956 and have been lifelong members. So involved with the church, FCC recognized him for 30 years of service by granting him “Elder Emeritus” for selfless duty as communion server to shut-ins for 30 years. His faithfulness to the church was recognized as he taught the men’s class, worked men’s breakfasts as a cook, Chi-Rho teacher, and served on the Boards of Commission of Ministry of OK, Phillips University, and Texoma Camp Board.

He was an active community member, serving on the Board of Community Residences, United Way, Chamber of Commerce, Senior Citizens board, as well as various projects benefitting the Duncan community. The City of Duncan and the State of Oklahoma recognized Carl in July 2019 as King of Duncan for his lifelong commitment and dedication and outstanding service to the community of Duncan.

As Evelyn’s Alzheimer’s began to increase, Carl found a place for memory care and assisted living where he could visit Evelyn daily. He spent the last five years caring for her.

Carl will be remembered as a devoted husband and dedicated father and grandfather. He was a faithful servant to God and left a legacy of serving the church and community.

Carl was a good friend to many.

Visitation is Sunday, January 10, at Whitt Funeral Home, Duncan, from 2-4 PM. Funeral services at FCC will be on Monday, January 11, at 10 AM. The service will be live streamed on facebook.com/firstchristianchurchduncan. Burial will be in Duncan Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to First Christian Church to the Carl & Evelyn Slifer Memorial Scholarship Fund to benefit the youth as needed.
