Pauline Cunningham

Sunrise 8/20/1931 – Sunset 1/3/2021

“HUMBLE”
But those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.

Pauline Cunningham was born on August 20, 1931 in Durham, NC. She married Benjamin Franklin Cunningham on February 3, 1951 and they were together for 49 years and maintained a beautiful home. Benjamin predeceased her on May 25, 1999. Pauline was the daughter of Willie and Helen Amos, of Durham, NC. Pauline’s life was filled with family. She was a devoted and loving wife and mother of three children. During her lifetime, she held several jobs as a nurse’s aide at Duke Hospital in Durham, NC. She was also a factory worker in Paterson, NJ, sales clerk at Two Guys in Wayne, NJ and her last employment was as a teacher’s assistant in Paterson, NJ. Pauline graduated from James W. Whitman High School in Durham, NC. Pauline enjoyed taking care of her family; she was an early riser due to her husband’s employment hours. She made sure he and her children had breakfast before work and School. Her life was entirely focused on her responsibilities. She delegated chores to her girls and taught them how to cook and maintain a household. Pauline was extremely task oriented. She was a compulsive cleaner who didn’t allow ashes in the ashtray, nor garbage in the wastebasket.
Pauline loved her soap operas. She didn’t allow her children to talk to her or question her while they were on. Pauline enjoyed playing checkers. She also loved to fish with her husband.
In 1975, she turned her life over to the Lord. She smoked for many years but once she accepted the Lord as her personal savior she stopped smoking immediately. Pauline’s life from 1975 up until her passing was totally dedicated to the word of God. She attended New Hope Baptist Church while living in Newark. She read the bible constantly, prayed, and meditated on the word.
Prior to her hospitalization in August, she enjoyed daily bible study with her children. She knew the word and loved talking about the Lord. Pauline was extremely wise and spoke the truth. You probably didn’t want to hear some of the things she told you, but she always came from a place of love and wisdom.

Her daughter, Patricia A. Phillips (David), her son, Benjamin Douglas Cunningham, all of Keyport, NJ, survives Pauline. Her daughter, Gloria Jean Darby predeceased her in March 2010. She has 10 grandchildren; Lakisha, Alvah Barrett (Latasha), Tinisha Creech (Apollos), Michele Carter (Naija), Tahira Vives (Carlos), Marquis, Michael, David (Jessica), Ryan, Paul. Paul predeceased her in 2016. She has 16 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great grandchildren. She has many sons and daughters from other mothers that she shared her love and wisdom with that will surely miss her.
