Gregory Andrew Simmons was the fourth child and the first son born on August 26, 1948 to Daisy (Ellarbee) and Andrew Simmons in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Greg is a 1966 graduate from the Benjamin Franklin High School for Boys, in Philadelphia, PA. He retired as an Engineer from the Philadelphia Housing Authority with 30 years of employment. He was also a Union Representative. He later, started his own business, Simmons Plumbing, and worked for Alfonso Cannon and Rick’s Funeral and Cremations in Philadelphia. Gregory was an avid motorcyclist with Philly Extreme Motorcycle Club. A member of Widow’s Son Lodge #4 of the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of PA and a Shriner in Pyramid Temple #1 in Philadelphia, PA. He loved to travel, dance, and sing. Greg sung in various choirs. Among his favorites, were the Simmons Family Choir, the Male Chorus of BUMBC, and the Men of Valor. He loved spending time and celebrating with his family and friends. Greg joined Upper Room Baptist church in his youth. He later fellowshipped with Love United Baptist Church where he became an Ordained Deacon. Upon relocating to Screven, Ga., he joined Bennet Union Missionary Baptist Church. Greg married the love of his life, Rosalyn James, on May 5, 2001. He was fiercely devoted to her for over 19 years. He was preceded in death by both his parents, his sisters Emma Mae Cleveland and Vivian Washington, and brother Ronald J, Simmons. Gregory was the shepherd over his family. He loved his family dearly. Gregory passed away on December 29, 2020. He now watches over his wife, Rosalyn; his children Gail Simmons, Edmond (Cornese) Dove, and Monae Dove; granddaughter Avondylina Simmons; his best buddy, grandson Tazyr N. Campbell; sisters Laura Barbour and Charmain Simmons; sisters in law Sarah Simmons, Debra James-Werts and Quentetta (Warren) Coleman; his nephew and niece that he raised - Christopher and Stephanie Turner; Rona Long; one aunt Catherine Jackson; uncle Vernon (Letticoe) Williams; a host of nieces, nephews cousins, godchildren, and many other relatives and friends. A graveside service will be held on Sunday, January 3, 2021 @ 12:00 p.m., at Sunset Oaks Memorial Cemetery, 1570 Sunset Blvd., Jesup, GA. The service will be livestreamed and can be viewed on Royal Funeral Home Inc. website. *Those planning to attend the service are asked to kindly wear your PPE (masks) and observe the 6ft. distancing guidelines set by our local authorities and the CDC to better protect against the spread of the COVID-19 virus.
