Sandra Sue Richard Obituary

Sandra Sue Mehaffy Richard of New London, IA formerly Grayslake, IL passed away on December 3, 2020 at New London Specialty Care. Sandra was born on June 29, 1940, in Burlington, IA; the daughter of Robert Branham and Gertrude Lovey (Lyons) Mehaffy. She married Morris “Gregg” Richard on October 21, 1960 in Danville, IA. He died July 2, 2005. She was a member of the 1958 graduating class of Danville High School, Danville, IA where she played basketball, softball, and the saxophone in the band. She went on to work for IRC in Burlington where she met her loving husband. She loved sports, music and dancing and especially loved watching her grandkids play sports and listening to them play in their respective bands. Not to mention a diehard Iowa Hawkeye, Chicago Cubs and Bulls fan. She just wasn’t a mom to her three girls but to many more. Being a part of her tribe, you knew she always had a warm meal, a place for you to stay, an ear to listen and advice that was valued. Sandra is survived by her daughters Cynthia (Dale) Gray, West Allis, WI; Lori (Bob) Ness, Grayslake, IL; and Renee (Tim) Kemnetz, Peyton, CO; proud grandmother of Amanda (Jeremy) Wegner, Katelyn (Patrick) Addy, Cody Gray, Matthew (Becca) Kemnetz, Cally Hayes, Andrew Kemnetz and Isabella Hayes; and great-grandchildren Ashlynn Wegner, Abigail Wegner, Lydia Wegner, James Wegner and Rachel Addy; loving sister of Meredith Mehaffy; fond sister-in-law of Marcia (the late Bill) Dunbar; dear aunt, and great-aunt to many. She was known as Nanny to them. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, her sister Gloria Jean (Wilbur) Lucas, her brothers Jack (Wanda) Mehaffy, and Rodney (Darlene) Mehaffy. Sandra loved and was loved by all who knew her, and she will be missed dearly. According to her wishes, her body has been cremated and burial beside her beloved husband Gregg will be held at a later date in Long Creek Cemetery. Due to the Covid health crisis, a Celebration of her life will hopefully be held in the Spring. Online condolences may be left at www.elliottfuneralchapel.com.
