James V. Banks Obituary

James (JB/Jimmy) Vernon Banks departed his earthly life on Tuesday, December 1, 2020 at WellSpan York Hospital. He was the husband of Shelva J. (Murray) Banks whom he affectionately called (Binky) and he was her “Blue Light Special” with whom they celebrated 21 years of marriage on September 25, 2020. James was born on June 20, 1953 to the late (Florine S Breeland). James was the oldest of five siblings, Ronald L. Banks (deceased), Darlene A Diggs, Freda A Brown and Carla R. Penn-Hopson. James and his siblings grew up on Frey’s Ave, Parkway Blvd and Girard Ave. Jimmy loved his siblings and often made sure they were all ready for school and fed while his parents worked. James was educated through the York City School System, attending Franklin Elementary, Phineas Davis and was a graduate of William Penn Sr. High, Class of 1973. During his high school years “JB” participated in the wresting program under the direction of Mr. Dave Graybill. Jimmy always worked, as a young teenager, he and his brother Ron were paper carriers for the York Dispatch. James was a truck driver for over 45 years for various trucking companies, including The Cocoa Cola Company and Ollies Warehouse of York, in his earlier years of employment he worked as welder at New York Wire Co. James (Jimmy) enjoyed planting everything! He made sure that his house as well as the True Bread Church had variations of flowers that were vibrant which showed his pride in making sure the church and his home was well taken care of. He was a master at remodeling, no job was too big. He took on many challenges, which included anywhere from hotel renovations to the excessively big job of renovating churches. He liked cooking and grilling with family (His collard greens were tender and tasty). His joy was taking his love out to eat to a new restaurant, while smiling…and asking her “What she thought of it?” Also, during his down times (which were few) he loved playing solitaire, doing word search puzzles, listening to country music (we referred to him as the black cowboy), gospel and old school music which was played loudly and proudly. James was an avid Eagles fan; proof of that was his truck and “The man cave! James leaves to celebrate his legacy his wife Shelva; a beloved daughter Takeria Jasmon Brown; stepdaughter Gennean Croker (Tyrone); 4 stepsons Michael Hancock of Penbrook, Antoine Miller of Harrisburg., Curtis Miller of Chicago and Christopher Miller of Harrisburg; Stepfather Odell Breeland, siblings Darlene Diggs (Lucious), Freda Brown (Eugene) Carla Penn Hopson (Tony), Sister in Law Adrienne E.
