Richard S. Schultz Obituary

Richard S. Schultz, age 88 of Huron, SD, passed away on November 23, 2020, at Avantara in Milbank.

Due to Covid concerns, services will be held at a later date.

Richard Sidney Schultz was born on June 13, 1932, in Watertown, SD. He was the son of George and Minnie (Waege) Schultz. He spent his childhood near Stockholm, SD, on the family farm as one of five children. He completed technical school for Radio Engineering in Omaha, NE, in 1951. He married Joyce Dahlgren on September 14, 1952, and raised a family in Ortonville, MN.

Richard began his career in radio at KWAT Radio Station in Watertown in 1952. In 1956 he became co-owner of KDIO Radio Station in Ortonville where he enjoyed everything from announcing and sales, to the technical aspects of radio and business ownership. KDIO was known during those years for keeping the community connected with local news and weather reports, as well as, the all important 6:30 AM “snow day school closing announcements”. He finished his successful career in South Dakota operating as both a consulting radio engineer and an
inspector for South Dakota Broadcasters.

In his spare time, he enjoyed radio-controlled airplanes and fishing. He was also known to friends and family as an all-around “fix-it” guy who could engineer a solution with a smile. Richard loved to tell stories about his growing up years on the farm, his many years in the radio business, and his faith. Richard passed away at the age of 88 on November 23, 2020 at Avantara in Milbank.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Joyce Schultz of Ortonville, MN; children: Valerie Schultz (Dave Cooley) of Appleton, WI; John (Barb) Schultz of Las Vegas, NV; Nancy (Steve) Linder of Shorewood, MN; daughter-in-law, Shannon Klocke of Burnsville, MN; nine grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents: George and Minnie Schultz; sons: Mark and Paul; and brothers: Harold, Alvin, George, and Dale.

He will be missed by his many special friends around South Dakota and Minnesota.
