He was born February 6, 1929 in Wasioja Township, Dodge County, Minnesota the son of Forrest and Jessie (Bringgold) Chapin. He grew up on the family farm in Wasioja Township and graduated from West Concord High School in 1946. He continued his education at the University of Minnesota graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal and Economic Science. He served in the United States Army from 1951 to 1953 at the Medical Research Center and Army Chemical Center in Maryland. On March 29, 1958, he married Shirley Miller in Brownton, Minnesota. The couple made their home and raised their four children on the farm where John was born. He was a dairy farmer and raised purebred Holstein cattle. He sold the dairy cows in 1990 and continued farming until 1998. John loved to garden, travel and read. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church where he faithfully attended and served. He was also a member of the West Concord American Legion and served on the Greenway Board in Rochester. He is survived by his wife, Shirley Chapin of Dodge Center; children, Linda (Les) Rainwater of West Fargo, ND, Janet (Robert) Engvall of Barrington, RI, Ruth (Frank) Broniec of Duluth, GA and Robert Chapin of Tucson, AZ; grandchildren, Trevor Rainwater, Ellecia (Aaron) Brockshus, Conan Rainwater, Andrew Engvall, Benjamin Engvall, Jonathan Broniec, William Broniec, and Morgan Broniec; sister, Julie Klem of Apple Valley and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Forrest and Jessie; brother James Chapin and sister, Jean Dyvad Bartholomew. A private graveside service will be held.
