Douglas G. McFarland Bucksport, Maine Obituary

Douglas G. McFarland

On Saturday, November 28, 2020, Douglas Guy McFarland, devoted husband, father, and grandfather, passed away at age 72. Doug was born on March 11, 1948, in Bangor, Maine, to Guy and Frances McFarland. He grew up and attended school in Frankfort, and was a 1966 graduate of Hampden Academy. Doug was a proud Veteran, serving five years as a U.S. Navy Submariner. He had a 46-year career working at the paper mill in Bucksport, Maine. In 1970, Doug married the love of his life and his best friend, Kathleen (Crawford) McFarland of East Millinocket. They shared 50 years of joy and laughter. Together they raised daughter, Angela, and son, Doug. They started their life together in Frankfort, building their house from trees Doug and his father cut and milled. This was the first of many projects Doug tackled with enthusiasm and an unmatched work ethic. When Doug retired, he and Kathy moved year-round to Sandy Point, where they created countless memories with family and friends. Doug’s love of life, his positive approach to every opportunity and challenge, his generosity, and his sense of humor were his gifts to all who were lucky enough to have known him. In his own unique way, Doug made every person feel special. He was a compassionate listener, a patient teacher, and a superb role model to many, extending beyond his immediate family. Doug was a man of his community, willing to help anyone, any time, and he did so. The definition of selflessness, Doug loved with a huge heart and was loved just as deeply. Doug was preceded in death by his father, Guy; mother, Frances; and sister, Diane. He is survived by his wife, Kathy; his daughter and son-in-law Angela and Joe Cahill; his son and daughter-in-law Doug and Dena McFarland; and his six grandchildren, whom he adored and was extremely proud of: Ethan, Benjamin, Harrison, Samuel, Sullivan, and Elizabeth. Doug will also be missed by several nieces, nephews, brother and sister-in-laws, and many friends and neighbors. Doug’s family wants to extend their heartfelt gratitude to all his caregivers at the Lafayette Cancer Center and Kindred Home and Hospice Care. A Catholic Mass intention will be said in Doug’s memory at St. Vincent de Paul Church in Bucksport on December 14th at 8:30 am. A burial and celebration of life will take place in the Spring. In lieu of flowers please send donations to the Searsport Food Cupboard, P.O. Box 424, Searsport, ME 04974 Condolences to the family may be expressed at mitchelltweedie-young.com.
