Stephen Matey, Jr. Obituary

Stephen Matey, Jr., 80, of Torrington, CT, peacefully passed away Monday, November 30, 2020, at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital after a brief illness with his family by his side.  He was the beloved husband of Marie “Angie” (DeFeo) Matey for 59 years.

Steve was born July 5, 1940, in Torrington, CT, the son of the late Bessie (Sedlack) and Stephen Matey, Sr.  He was employed for many years by John DelMonte Construction as a carpenter where he proudly pointed out the numerous homes he helped to build in the Torrington area throughout his career.

He was a lifetime member of the Elk’s lodge #372, a member of the Sullivan Senior Center, the Torrington Historical Society, and a founding member of the Bicentennial CB Radio Club.  An avid bowler for 45 years, he was also a member of the Sky Top Bowling League.   Some of his greatest enjoyments in life were dancing with his beautiful wife and camping with this loving family.  He was always willing to share his carpentry skills and took great pride in helping each of his kids with projects over the years.

Steve was the measure of a good man, a loving husband, caring father, friend, and neighbor.  His smile would light up a room and he will be deeply missed.

His family is so thankful for the times that they have shared laughing and living life with him.  Steve found joy sharing meals with his family at “Mateyfests”, making wine with his sons-in-law and traveling the world.

In addition to his wife Angie, he is survived by three daughters, Lynn Downs and her husband Glenn of Torrington, CT, Lori Sparks and her husband Tim of Torrington, CT, Lisa Jacobs and her husband Karl of Pleasant Valley, CT; one sister, Gloria Chiarella and her husband Ralph of Derby, CT; six grandchildren, Michael and Kevin Downs, Rachel and Megan Sparks, Julia Torrant (Adam), Jenna Jacobs; one great granddaughter, Averyll Torrant, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Contributions in Steve’s memory may be made to St. John Paul the Great Parish (St. Peter Church) 160 Main St., Torrington, CT 06790
