Louis Joseph Monaco Obituary

Louis Joseph “Lou” Monaco of Glendale Arizona passed away Saturday, November 28, from heart failure at the age of 94. Lou is survived by his son Joseph Monaco and daughter-in-law Cheryl; his grandchildren Jacquelyn Monaco Pascucci and James Monaco; his great grandchildren, James and Alexander Pascucci; niece and nephew Linda and Toby Wilson, and his dog Jonah; as well as many other nieces and nephews. Lou never met a stranger, partially because he was so friendly and partially because he just knew everyone. He loved people and he loved dogs. He was quick to laugh and always smiling. A top-rate storyteller, Lou remembered everything, down to very specific and seemingly irrelevant details from 80 years ago. He could probably tell you the score of every game he ever watched, which is really saying something because his life revolved around sports. Born in Brooklyn, New York on April 12, 1926, Lou was best known to Phoenix locals as the effervescent parking attendant at Coyote and Diamondback games, as well as a semi-frequent guest on Good Morning Arizona. A WWII veteran, Lou served as a gunner’s mate second class aboard the USS San Francisco during the invasions of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. After the war, he work mainly as a milkman, delivering milk up multiple flights of stairs (no elevators at that time) from 11:00 pm until 7:00 am, which probably contributed to his good health and 94 years of youth. During this time he also drove a taxi, delivered medical supplies and owned a grocery store/deli in the Corona section of Queens, NY. Lou retired in 1994 and moved to Arizona. In 1996 he began a new career with the Diamondbacks and the Coyotes, which continued through 2017, his 91st year. The viewing will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 7th at Heritage Funeral Chapel at 6830 W Thunderbird Road, Peoria. Due to COVID restrictions, there will only be a private funeral service for family, but you may watch the service live at noon on Friday, January 8th .
