Robert F. "Chico" Melanson

Portland – Robert “Chico” F. Melanson, 82, loving husband, father, and “Grampy” passed away peacefully at the Barron Center on November 27, 2020, with his wife Olivia by his side. Robert was born on December 17, 1937, in Berlin, New Hampshire, the son of the late Francis and Beatrice (Bollard) Melanson. At a young age the Melanson family moved to South Portland, where Robert attended local schools, he was part of the 1955 graduating class of South Portland High School. Robert proudly served his country by enlisting in the United States Navy, and was honorably discharged on August 19, 1959. After his service in the Navy and pondering what was next, his friend Bill suggested he attend Barber school. Robert heeded Bill’s advice, attending Barber school in Lewiston. The two close friends worked together in Bill’s barbershop before Robert decided to go out on his own, opening Chico’s Barber Shop on Ocean Street in South Portland. Robert took great pride in his work as a barber, he enjoyed meeting new people and at times offering much needed advice to those who sat in his chair. Always mindful that God did indeed have a plan; along with a little help from close friends, Robert met a remarkable woman named Olivia, and on November 11, 1967 the two were married. Robert and Olivia’s love story spanned over 53 years, raising three wonderful boys together. Robert understood the importance of providing for his family; unhappy with the rise in gas prices, Robert decided to park the family wagon and ride his moped to work. His family recalls Robert placing two baskets on the moped to hold his work gear and lunch. Having such a strong work ethic made it difficult for Robert to take a vacation from time to time, but in 2004 the opportunity to visit their son, Darren, and grandchildren in Hawaii was presented; both Robert and his wife did not hesitate making the trip to the island. They spent a month enjoying what the island life had to offer, but most importantly spending time with family meant a great deal to both of them. Robert was an avid walker; for 19 years he walked to work and during some down time he enjoyed sharing in a stroll with his wife along the Promenade. All those who knew Robert recognized that he was an avid sports fan, and being a true New Englander followed the Patriots. It was not uncommon for people to turn to Robert for all the sporting events in the area, he diligently read the newspaper and followed the accomplishments of local athletes. Robert’s son, Dana, reflected that his father was always there for his family, he always enjoyed spending the holidays with those he loved especially his grandchildren. He was patient, kind, helpful, great father and a true friend. Robert is survived by his wife, Olivia Melanson of South Portland; three sons, Dean Melanson and wife Lynn of Virginia, Dana Melanson of Old Orchard, Darren Melanson and his wife Amy of California, five grandchildren, Caitlynn, Evan, Charlott, Ryan and Madison; sister in law, Selina Scott of Parsonsfield; brothers in law, David Thibeau of Mobile, AL. Michael Thibeau of Eliot, and many extended family members. Olivia and her family are very grateful for the care and compassion Robert received while at the Barron Center; the staff extended their kindness in ways that brought comfort to not only Robert but to his family. Visiting Hours celebrating Robert’s life will be held from 4:00 – 6:00 pm, on Thursday, December 3, 2020 at the Conroy-Tully Walker South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1:00 pm, on Friday, December 4, 2020, at Holy Cross Church, 124 Cottage Road, South Portland. Burial with military honors will follow at the Calvary Cemetery, South Portland. Relatives and friends are respectfully requested to wear a mask and practice social distancing.
