Eugene Joseph Schledorn Obituary

Eugene Schledorn peacefully went to be with his Lord and Savior on November 2, 2020. A Godly man, he was a beloved husband, father and grandfather. He was born May 7, 1930 in Dansville, New York, where he later fell in love and embarked on a 64-year marriage with his beloved wife Joyce. Throughout that time the two remained inseparable and fiercely devoted to one another. A U.S. Army veteran, he served in Korea in the early 1950s and, upon his return, married Joyce and began his studies at the University of Buffalo where he graduated with a degree in pharmacy in 1958. Never fond of the cold, he immediately moved Joyce and their newborn son Mark to Miami. Two years later, their daughter Lisa was born and two years after that, the couple welcomed another son, John. Gene worked at various pharmacies in the Hialeah area until 1970, when he asked his employer, SupeRX Drugs, to transfer him to Melbourne to help open a new store. The couple purchased a house in Indian Harbour Beach and for the next 20 years, Gene worked for SupeRX, first on Babcock Street and later at SupeRX Food and Drugs in Indian Harbour Beach. After that store closed, he worked in the K-Mart pharmacies in Indian Harbour Beach and in Melbourne until retiring in 1993. While living in Miami, Gene served as Sunday school superintendent at the First Alliance Church. Upon moving to Brevard County, he and his family fellowshipped at the Bethany Bible Chapel By the Sea and later at Community Bible Church in Palm Bay where they worshipped for nearly 40 years. During retirement, Gene and Joyce provided office support for the Hour of Grace and Power prison ministry under the direction of pastor Dwight Porter. Like his father Fred, Gene had a lifelong passion for gardening and music, which he said encouraged him to celebrate the wonder of God’s creation. To that end, he never tired of the wonder of each fresh bud and each new shoot, filling his yard with ornate pathways and koi ponds dotted with Scripture verses mounted on signposts, reminding him of God’s grace and tender mercies. Indoors, Gene found joy in the solitude of playing hymns and classics on the piano. He is survived by his wife Joyce, their sons Mark and John, son-in-law Tom Andrews and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by their daughter, Lisa and his three sisters Lora Rienholtz, Norma Smith and Phyllis VanDerwerken Miller. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Edward M. Poe Hospice Care Center — St. Francis Lifestage Center in Titusville, FL
