Stanley Johnson Finch Obituary

Stanley Johnson Finch, age 86, passed away November 25, 2020. Stanley was born in Wildersville, Tennessee, on September 26, 1934, and was the son of Spencer Francis Finch and Willie Edith (Penix) Finch. He moved to Oak Ridge, Tennessee in 1944 where his parents worked as part of the Manhattan Project. He was a resident of Oak Ridge for 50 years, from 1944 – 1994, and moved to Watts Bar Lake around Kingston, TN after his retirement. After graduating from Oak Ridge High School, he served in the Army and Tennessee National Guard from 1957 – 1964 as a tank commander in Company C, 5th Medium Tank Battalion, 109th Armored Division. In 1952, he took a job working for Union Carbide as a process operator in the K-29, K-31, and K-33 buildings, an integral part of the gaseous diffusion cascade at the Oak Ridge Gaseous Diffusion K-25 Plant. He moved into telecommunications where he worked his way up and became a respected supervisor in the mainframe computing center. There he helped with developments in the computer age for over 30 years and was trusted to process some of the most important national security information in the United States. He retired from Martin Marietta Energy Systems after 41 years. He was an amateur ham radio operator, licensed by the FCC as K4ESW in 1959 and a member of the ARRL for the rest of his life. He had an extraordinary memory. He was interviewed as part of the Center for Oak Ridge Oral History (COROH) project, and his experiences were featured in local books. Stan was known for his many talents. His play-by-ear piano talent brought enjoyment to his high school, family, friends, and community, and he played with several small bands and combos from 1950 – 1980. He won numerous talent contests in Oak Ridge and surrounding towns, and at age 14 his talent led to his winning a trip to California. He enjoyed team bowling, gardening, and spent countless hours with his wife, Gail, fishing, boating, traveling, and was an avid NASCAR fan. Stan loved and took great pride in his family and will be remembered as intelligent, wise, a man of integrity and strong work ethic, a devoted husband, fun-loving father and grandfather, and memorable brother and friend. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother-in-law Earl Parks, and his sister-in-law Elizabeth Finch. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Marcia Gail Price Finch of Harriman, TN; daughters Myra Mansfield and husband Jack of Oak Ridge, Becky Eddy and husband Brent of Knoxville; son Steven Finch and wife Amanda of Kennesaw, GA; brothers Larry Finch of Knoxville; Alan Finch and wife Darlene of Jacksboro, TN; sister Peggy Finch Parks of Austell, GA; sister-in-law Ann Price of Oak Ridge; grandsons Samuel Eddy of Durham, NC; Dakota Eddy of Brentwood, TN; Jonathan Scott of Oak Ridge; Alex Finch of Kennesaw; granddaughters Esther Smith of Hendersonville TN; Elizabeth Sawyer of Murfreesboro, TN; Emily Finch and Claire Finch of Kennesaw; great-granddaughters Kyrstin and Kennedy Smith of Hendersonville; and his loyal German Shepherd, Trey. The family requests, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Middle Tennessee German Shepherd Rescue (https://www.mtgsr.com/donate). Weatherford Mortuary is in charge of the arrangements.
