Frank Volk Obituary

Frank Volk, 90, of Rugby, passed into the loving arms of the Lord on Saturday, November 28, 2020, at the Heart of America Care Center. Frank was born on April 11, 1930 to Thomas and Elizabeth (Jezenwisch) Volk in Karlsruhe, North Dakota. Frank was raised on a rural farm in Karlsruhe and attended country school. Following his education, he helped on the family farm until 1950 when he moved to Rugby and was employed by the Rugby Creamery from 1950 until 1959. He was united in marriage to his one true love, Kathryn (Lesmeister) on October 14, 1952 and together they raised 10 children. In July 1959, Frank purchased the Rugby Sanitation Service from his brother-in-law and sister Robert and Margaret Fosser and named it Frank’s Sanitation Service. In September 1973, he sold the business and purchased the Center Motel in December of 1973 where he operated the motel until December 1988. He then worked as the manager for the Eastside Apartments from 1989 to 1995 when he retired. Frank became a member of the Knights of Columbus in 1956 to which he held various titles and was Grand Knight in 1975. He was also a member of the John F. Kennedy #0786 Assembly of the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus where he was a Faithful Navigator for one term and was awarded the Knight of the Year Award in 1978-1979. Frank was an assistant scouts master for Troop 546 Boy Scouts of America that was sponsored by the Knights of Columbus. Frank was a member of the Little Flower Church and served on the JustIthe Council for approximately 15 years and was a past president of the Little Flower School PTO. He was a charter member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles and the Knights of Columbus Council 4136 of Rugby. Frank was also a longtime and dedicated volunteer for the Rugby Hospital where he received the Volunteer of the Year Award and delivered meals on wheels for several years. He was an active member of the Senior Citizens Center and served as treasurer. Frank was a delegate for the Silver Hair Assembly, and a board member for the Souris Basin Transportation for Pierce County. He entered the Heart of America Care Center in Rugby on November 2, 2018 until the time of his death. Frank lived a full life dedicated to his faith in God, family and a strong work ethic. He made sure that those attributes were firmly instilled into his children and grandchildren. Frank so deeply loved and tirelessly provided for his wife and 10 children. Even though he had a full house, Frank was considered to be a second father to so many. Frank thoroughly enjoyed golfing, fishing, playing cards and camping where he spent many nights just enjoying the campfire. He loved spending as much time as possible with his children and grandchildren and loved more than anything to attend his grandchildren’s sporting events where he was their biggest supporter and score keeper. Frank and Kathryn started a family reunion tradition which began in Estes Park, Colorado in 1994 and the tradition continues today through his children and grandchildren. Frank is survived by his wife of 68 years, six (6) sons, Harry (Cyndy) Volk and Rodney (Kim) of Kalama, WA; Timothy (Miriam) Volk of Plano, TX; Myron Volk of Jamestown, ND; Roger Volk of Rugby, ND; Frank, Jr. (Kelly) Volk, South Weber, UT; four (4) daughters, Deborah (Glenn) Flyer of Phoenix, AZ; Renae (Perry) Schmidt of Roseville, CA; Sheryl (Kevin) Mears of Horace, ND; and Sherry (Robert) Halvorson of Rugby, ND.
