Peggy Joyce Shanks Obituary

Peggy (Waller) Shanks, 82, of Arkansas City passed away Tuesday, November 24, 2020, at the Presbyterian Health Care Unit. Cremation has been effected and a Celebration of Life is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Friday, December 4, 2020, at the Parker Cemetery. Social distancing guidelines remain in affect and please wear a facial covering. Peggy was born October 2, 1938, to Forrest W. and Lola I. (Sayers) Waller in Wellington, KS. Peggy grew up and attended schools in Wellington where she was active in Girl Scouts, dancing (ballet, toe, and acrobats), music (piano, violin, clarinet, choir), and the Kayettes. She graduated from Wellington High School in May of 1956. After high school she attended Emporia State Teachers College through 1958. In college she majored in business and was a member of the Alpha Sigma Tau sorority. On August 16, 1958, she married Don Shanks in Wellington. During their marriage they lived in Arkansas City, Wichita, Emporia, Mulvane, and Seattle, WA. During her adult life, Peggy was involved in church activities and was a member of the Hackney Community Baptist Church as well as an active officer in the Lakewynds Homeowners Association, member of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority, a past president of the Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, was a Bluebird/Campfire Girls leader (Ark City), Cub Scout leader (Mulvane). Peggy enjoyed being a homemaker for thirteen years, then worked in the offices of Rodeo Meats for eight years, Cowley College for six months, Gott/Rubbermaid for twelve years, and at USD 470 for six years. In her spare time she enjoyed fishing, boating, swimming, sewing, crafts, bridge, traveling, and watching her grandchildren’s participation in various sports and music. Peggy is survived by Don, her husband of 62 years; daughter Cindy Sanderholm and husband Brian all of Arkansas City; son Michael Shanks and wife Velvet of Rockwall, TX; 7 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Peggy was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, and granddaughter Jodi LeAnn Sanderholm. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the Rivercross Hospice or Hackney Community Baptist Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
