Dorothy Cave Aldrich
<p>Dorothy Cave Aldrich passed away peacefully in her home at the age of 93 from natural causes on November 23, 2020.</p> <p>She was preceded in death by her parents Harold and Dorothy Cave and her husband Jack Aldrich. She is survived by her son Ralph Izard and wife Kathy of Albuquerque and her daughter Kate Henningsen and husband Tom of Albuquerque.</p> <p>Dorothy, known to her friends and family as Dolly was born in 1927 in Nashville, Tennessee.</p> <p>She attended Agnes Scott Women's College and during that time danced with the Atlanta Ballet Company. She married Capt. Ray Izard and they lived in Roswell NM where both her children were born, and her parents resided. Ray later passed away. She taught history at Goddard High School for many years after receiving her degrees from the Universities of Colorado and Wyoming.</p> <p>Dolly was a supporter of the arts and in earlier years was involved in the Roswell Little Theatre both directing and acting. She was very supportive of the Roswell Symphony and Robert H Goddard Museum.</p> <p>She met her recent husband Jack while doing research for her book, Beyond Courage which focused on the members of the New Mexico National Guard who were kept captive after the notorious Bataan Death March. Dolly and Jack travelled many miles together around the world doing research and interviews for that book and her many subsequent books. Dolly wrote under the pen name of Dorothy Cave. She received numerous awards for her writing including the prestigious Zia Award, two Southwest Writers Awards and the Manuscripts International Award. Her most notable books were, Beyond Courage, Go Find the Mountain, Four Trails to Valor, Mountains of the Blue Stone, Song on a Blue Guitar and her last book, God's Warrior. In 2018 she was presented a Congressional Award from congressman Steve Pierce with a certificate and a United States Flag that was flown in her name over the United States Capitol in Washington DC.</p> <p>Dolly was devoted to her children and instilled in them her sense of adventure, humor, love of animals, compassion and she always set the example of strength and courage by standing up for what she believed in.</p> <p>Dolly will always be remembered as an ardent Conservative, Historian, Author, Christian and for her great love for our Country, our U.S. Military and New Mexico.</p> <p>Her children would like to express their heartfelt and sincere thanks to our family friend Paul Bierwirth for his many years of assistance and devotion to her and also much appreciation for her caretaker Cristina Ortega and staff who took such good care of her in recent months.</p> <p>In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her name to the Roswell Humane Society, 703 E. McGaffey St., Roswell, NM 88203 or to the Wounded Warriors Project, P.O. Box 758516, Topeka, Kansas 66675-8516.</p> <p>Due to the Covid 19 Pandemic only a private family graveside service will be held at this time.
