Elizabeth "Betty" Conrod Obituary

Torrington- Elizabeth “Betty” (DiPippo) Conrod, 85, passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday, November 24, 2020. She was the beloved wife of the late Clarence J. Conrod.

Mrs. Conrod was born in Torrington on January 23, 1935, daughter of the late Generoso and Giovannina (Vitallo) DiPippo. She was their tenth child and born at home during a blizzard. There was so much snow (up to the windows we were told) the doctor could not drive up Highland Avenue, so someone from a neighboring farm was requested to pick the doctor up at the bottom of the hill with his horse and sleigh.

Betty was a lifelong Torrington City resident and a long time employee of the Nidec Corporation. She later served as a secretary for the Torrington Area Health District. Betty was an avid bridge player and a member for many years of the Torrington Bridge Club. She loved cooking, baking, and crossword puzzles. One of her greatest joys was writing letters, especially to numerous newspaper editors, where she was never afraid to voice her opinion. Many of those letters were published. She was a graduate of Torrington High School and as an adult became the first member of her family to earn a college degree from the University of Connecticut.

She is survived by a daughter, Colleen Conrod Reller and her husband William of Winchester Center; a son, Scott Conrod of Watertown; a sister, Lucy Fenn of Torrington; four grandchildren, Taylor Spelman, Wyatt Reller, Trevor Conrod, and Cody Conrod; brothers and sisters-in-law, Gloria DiPippo, Al Hricko, Lois Conrod, Irving Conrod, and Lillian Conrod; and very many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by three brothers, Angelo DiPippo, Francisco DiPippo, and Joseph DiPippo; five sisters, Jean Repas, Christine Hricko, Rose Fedor, Celeste Gath, and Carmella Marcantonio.

The family would like to thank the many nurses and staff members at Foothills Visiting Nurses Association and Companions and Homemakers of Litchfield for their excellent care and service. Especially out visiting nurse, Anne Quinlan, and our in home care giver Agnus Aidoo. Mere words can never express our appreciation and gratitude to you both for the years of outstanding hard work, care, and compassion. We could not have done it without you.

Funeral services and burial in St. Peter Cemetery, Torrington, will be held privately. Gleeson-Ryan Funeral Home, 258 Prospect St., Torrington, is in care of arrangements.

At the request of the family, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association at alz.org/ct.
