David K. Quinn Gloucester, Massachusetts Obituary

David K. Quinn

David K. Quinn, of Rockport, born March 13, 1943, has hung up his tool belt one final time. He passed away on November 21, 2020, at the Kaplan House in Danvers, from a brief and an extremely rare rapid progressing neurological disease. David fought a long battle of heart disease and complicated diabetes. He never gave up. Even right to the end he fought, but finally welcomed his time for peace. David aka Clyde, Butch, Papa and affectionately, Flannel Man, by so many, was an all-around great guy and good friend to everyone he met. He was always eager to lend a helping hand and will be greatly missed. Always finding a project to do, he was frequently seen with a hammer in one hand and a tape measure in the other, usually on a ladder or up on staging. David enjoyed coffee at Dunks with the guys and all those that would stop by the table for a quick joke or classic one of a kind, snide remark. He attended St. Ann’s School. David was a welder and HVAC mechanic by trade. He worked at Cox’s Industrial CAB company in the 70’s, later at O’Donnell-Usen for many years and Tadco. Even after his diagnosis of heart disease he worked part-time as a courier with Rockport National Bank. In his younger years, he was an auxiliary police officer with the Rockport Police Department, a job he took a lot of pride in and would often reflect back on. David loved the ocean as much as he loved Rockport. He used to own his own lobster boat and enjoyed taking his family out on hot summer’s day by “Thatchers”. Scuba diving off the coast of Rockport was a favorite activity of his and he treasured that time with his brother, Tom and brother-in-law, George “Big Guy” Budrow. One of David’s favorite pastimes as a young man was going hunting “down Maine” at his parents' camp. He was a true family man and devoted son. He especially loved spending time with family and friends, celebrating holidays, family occasions and random get-togethers. He looked forward each October to going to Boothbay Harbor, Maine to celebrate their anniversary. In 2018, he would take his first trip to Gettysburg with his daughter, Andrea. One trip led to three more. Most recently the end of September 2020. He walked the battlefields and cemeteries at Antietam, Harper’s Ferry and Monocacy as well. There he met many great friends who all adopted him as “the Dad’. David is survived by his wife, Justine (Parsons) of 54 years; his daughter, Andrea Quinn and her partner Michael Ferrante; his grandson, Phillip Lurie, his true pride and joy along with great-granddog, Brutus; his daughter, Roberta and her husband Peter Gayton and her step daughter, Krystle and family. David also leaves behind his brother, Tommy Quinn; sister Marcia Budrow and sister-in-law, Carol Parsons; many nieces and nephews who he had wonderful bonds with and his close life-long friend, Bruce Newman and his wife Debbie. David was predeceased by his parents, Herbert and Connie Quinn; his sister, Patricia, who died in infancy. He was also predeceased by his brothers-in-law, George Budrow, Russell and Dana Parsons and sister-in-law, Nancy Parsons. Our family cannot thank the wonderful team at Mass General Hospital for the tremendous level of compassionate care he received. A special word of gratitude goes to his long term cardiologists, Dr. G. William Dec and Dr. Michael Arsenian; long term physician, Dr. Sydney Wedmore, who together helped him live a quality life for more than twenty years after his diagnosis of heart disease. We will forever be grateful for the amazing physicians who advocated and guided us through such an unexpected and difficult time, Dr. Victor Carabba, Dr. Neil Kobrosky, Dr. Elias Massoud, the nursing team on Steele 1 at Addison Gilbert Hospital and the Kaplan House’s empathetic and supportive care. They made our final days peaceful and gave Dad all the respect and dignity he earned. There are no visiting hours. A graveside service will be held in Beechbrook Cemetery in West Gloucester on Wednesday, December 2, at 11a.m. Family and friends are cordially invited. Face coverings and social distancing is required. In lieu of flowers the family would welcome donations in David’s name to: Addison Gilbert Hospital, Cardiology Suite, Attn: Dr. Arsenian, 298 Washington St. Gloucester, MA 01930 and or the Kaplan Family Hospice House, 78 Liberty Street, Danvers, MA 01923. Arrangements are by the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington St. Gloucester. Online condolences may be given at: www.greelyfuneralhome.com
