Gerald "Jerry" Spier

Gerald L. “Jerry” Spier, 83, of Reading, passed away Sunday, November 22, 2020 at the Laurels of DeKalb in Butler, Indiana. He was born April 14, 1937 in Plymouth to Ray and Helen (Williamson) Spier. He married Lona Daglow on September 14, 1957 and she preceded him in death on December 1, 2009. Jerry graduated from Hillsdale High School. He was the former owner and operator of Hillsdale Travel Center. Once he sold the business, he stayed on and worked as a mechanic there for over 20 years before eventually retiring. He loved to collect old cars, cookie jars or anything else that caught his eye. He also enjoyed attending auctions and camping. Survivors include two children, Brenda VanHoosear and Doug Spier, both of Reading; grandchildren, Chanda (Doug) Hoyt, Sadie (Jimmy Heathcoe) Miller, Shannon (Gage) Guiter and Kristen (Corbin Bartsch) Spier; great-grandchildren, Lizabella, Fayelea, Ryan and Douglas; sister, Cathy Denning; and sister-in-law, Donna Spier. In addition to his wife, Lona, he was preceded in death by a brother, Bob Spier. Funeral and graveside services for Jerry Spier will be private. Public visitation will be held Friday, November 27, 2020 from 11-2 and 4-7 PM at the Eagle Funeral Home-George White Chapel in Reading. No more than 25 people will be allowed in the funeral home at a time and face coverings with social distancing will be required.
