Wolfeboro, NH

In the early morning hours of November 12, 2020, Martin William Mardis, (Bill) (99), a long-time resident of Wolfeboro, NH, passed peacefully in his sleep surrounded by family.

Born in Fayetteville, Arkansas on May 30, 1921, he was the first of twin boys. At 2 years of age, his family moved to Pennsylvania where he remained until he was about 11 years old. In 1932, following the depression years, his father was transferred to England. While there, he attended both public and private schools in Yorkshire. In the fall of 1937, he was given the opportunity to attend school at the Chateau de Changins in Switzerland. In addition to preparing for university exams, he exceled in rowing, soccer, tennis, skiing and hockey. Following his education in Switzerland, he attended the University of Leeds where he earned, with honours, the Degree of Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering.

During WWII, he served in the Royal Navy on the HMS Queen as a midshipman. His expertise was in the maintenance and repair of carrier-based aircraft. Following the war, he began a lasting career with Westinghouse Electric and moved back to the United States. It was at this time where he met the love of his life, Laura Howard. In 1951 they married and raised 5 sons, Paul, Jim, Michael, David and Stephen. Following several transfers, they made their home in Short Hills, NJ. He was a compassionate husband and father who devoted his life to his family. From annual family vacations and reunions, to all the activities his sons were involved in, he was always there for them throughout his life. He loved today’s technologies and was always eager to “figure out how things work”. His love and faith in God guided him throughout life.

Bill was predeceased by his parents, his brother and sister, and his wife Laura. He is survived by his five sons, four daughter-in laws, eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren. He was an inspiration to every one of them. His passion for life and family will always be remembered by those whose lives he touched.
