Raymond Malina Obituary

Raymond Malina, 79, of Oradell, New Jersey, passed away on November 17, 2020. He was born on February 28, 1941 in Honolulu, Hawaii.  He attended the Kamehameha School for Boys where he joined ROTC, later enlisting in the United States Navy where he proudly served aboard the USS Helena (CA-75), patrolling the Western Pacific after the Korean War.  Ray's military service took him to countries including South Korea, Taiwan, Japan, Guam, Australia, and the Philippines.  He developed an abiding respect and love for other cultures.  Following his military service Ray worked in the hospitality industry and continued travelling the world as an accountant for Sheraton Hotels.  Ray went on to work for many years at American Payroll Association, where he served as Chief Financial Officer.  At American Payroll Ray built an extended family of beloved friends from New York to San Antonio.

Ray was a food connoisseur who could identify exotic dishes and foods from all over the world.  He loved tennis, nature, poetry, singing, and music.  He learned to play piano late in life, taking lessons and eventually performing in a recital at the Juilliard School.  As a resident at Care One in Oradell, NJ Ray brought the joy of music to his fellow residents, playing piano in the dining room, and always providing words of comfort, loving friendship, and poetry to the elderly souls he felt privileged to know.

Ray is most remembered for his deep spirituality and fathomless patience.  Where others would show anger or annoyance, Ray showed only gracious acceptance, humor, and gratitude.  He reminded loved ones all the time that, as Tagore wrote, "the butterfly counts not months but moments, and has time enough."

Ray is survived by his children: Ryan Malina (son), Regan Malina (son), Lori Ann Malina-Lovell
(daughter) and Rodd Malina (son) and their mother Laila Ann Malina; step-daughter Jacqueline
Loeb Kraus and step-son Peter Loeb; daughters-in-law Rhonda Ashton Loeb and Sandee Malina,
and sons-in-law Warren M. Kraus and Johnny Lovell; grandchildren: Sarah and her husband
Mack; Sharon, Walter Jr. and his wife Molly; Timothy, Josiah, Cody, Jurnee, Amaree and Joshua Kraus; great
grandchildren Ki’ele and Noah; siblings Carolyn Malina, Calvin Malina, Sr., and David Malina, Jr.,
and many nieces and nephews. Ray is predeceased by his wife, Gloria Loeb Malina; mother Belle
Malina and father David Malina, Sr. and by his sister Verlie Ann Malina Wright; and by many
friends and extended family who mourn his loss but celebrate his life.
