Eleanor Grubbs Hetrick Obituary

Eleanor Hetrick

PHOENIX

Eleanor Grubbs Hetrick (Ellie), 82, of Phoenix, AZ passed away peacefully on November 11, 2020 with family by her side. Ellie was born November 15, 1937 in Hartford, CT to Frank and Frances Grubbs. She graduated at the top of her class at Emma Willard College-Preparatory School, and then attended Vassar College graduating in 1959 with a degree in Child Education. She worked primarily as a teacher and educator of grade school age children, most recently at Scottsdale Coronado High School before retiring in 2013. Ellie married Charlie Rice in 1961 and was blessed with three sons. Tyler, Dan and Jonathan Rice. Ellie later married George Hetrick in 1976 and was blessed with daughter Jennifer. Ellie was preceded in death by former husbands Charlie and George, and by son Dan. Ellie is survived by brother Denny (Debbie), sons Tyler (Dawn), Jonathan (Betsy), daughter Jennifer (Jeff) and daughter-in-law Heidi (Dan). Also by 10 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren and loving nieces and nephews.

Ellie was a long time member of Memorial Presbyterian Church in Phoenix since 1961. She was very active as a Sunday school teacher and Elder. She was a devoted member of the church handbells,  playing them up to very recently. She was also Stage Manager for numerous plays and musicals with the Phoenix Community Theaters.

Ellie was a sports enthusiast (especially for the Diamondbacks!) and avid reader, but will most be remembered by how she modeled discipleship and strong family values. She loved life and loved her family immensely. She never forgot a birthday. She made it a priority to attend and encourage all of her children's and grandchildren's events. She celebrated everything with family and hosted many family gatherings. She loved and stayed in meaningful contact with family and her friends. She was loved and will be greatly missed.

A memorial service will be held at a later time due to Covid.
