John 'Shiny Head' Avery Miller Obituary

John A. “Shiny Head” Miller, 71, of Creston died Friday, November 20, 2020 at his home in Creston. Celebration of Life Graveside Memorial Services will be held 2:00 p.m. Monday, November 30th at the Greenlawn Cemetery in Afton. Pastor Jodi Rushing will officiate the services. Military honors will be conducted by the Theodore J. Martens VFW Post #1797 of Creston. Masks are required and social distancing will be observed. No public visitation is scheduled. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Disabled American Veterans (DAV). Online condolences can be made at www.powersfh.com. John Avery Miller, son of Paul William and Lois Irene (Ruchman) Miller, was born on January 11, 1949, in Creston, Iowa. He was educated in the Creston Community Schools and graduated from Creston High School with the class of 1967. John enlisted with the United State Army on May 26, 1969 and served his country in the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged on November 29, 1970. John was united in marriage to Sue Ellen White on November 30, 1985 at the Christian Church in Creston. John attended the Jerusalem Methodist Church in rural Creston. He was a former member of the Creston Eagles and was active with his Thursday Golf Club at Pine Valley. John bartended at the Backdoor Lounge in Creston and was a former Mayor of Cromwell. John held various jobs throughout his life in Arizona, Texas and Iowa. John is survived by his wife Sue of Creston; three sons, Shad (Kristen) Miller of Oskaloosa, Caleb (Carrie) Utterback of Nashville, Tenn. and Jacob Miller with the USN stationed in Rota, Spain; grandchildren, Talya, Hailee, Jayden and Cyril Miller; sister Paula Stoner of San Antonio, T.X.; sister-in-law Linda White of Creston; brothers-in-law Charlie (Debbie) White of Creston and Frank White of Long Beach, Calif.; along with other extended relatives and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother-in-law Glen White, sister Dixie Templeton and nephew Matt White.
