Phillis Jeanne June Obituary

On November 18, 2020 Jeanne (Wunsch) June, 87, passed away unexpectedly. Jeanne was strong, alert and “delightful” according to the emergency room doctors but her big, warm heart just gave out. Jeanne grew up on the family farm in La Junta, Colorado with numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Her fondest memories were gathering at the main house to celebrate the Christmas holidays. After graduating from La Junta High School in 1951, she made the move to Nevada, Missouri to attend Cottey College graduating in 1953. The lure of home brought her back to Colorado where she enrolled at The University of Colorado where she received her Nursing Degree. It was during this time in 1954 she married Reid R June from Rocky Ford, Colorado and they began their life together. It was a busy year, getting married, and Reid serving as a 2nd Lt in the Army Corps of Engineering stationed at Fort Collins, Colorado. After being discharged from the Army they moved to Indiana for Reid’s job with Standard Oil. After a year they moved to Stillwater, Oklahoma where Reid continued his education at Oklahoma State University obtaining his Doctorate Degree in Mechanical Engineering leading to his 50-year career with the Boeing Company. With a transfer to Wichita, Kansas, Jeanne took the opportunity to open her own flower shop creating beautiful and amazing floral arrangements at “Jeanne’s Flower Basket”. The final Boeing transfer came in 1962 when they relocated to Bellevue, Washington to lay down their roots and raise their two daughters, Debbie and Linda. Jeanne remained in their home of 57 years. Even after Reid’s passing in 2016, she remained vigilant and strong to continue living alone with “Gracie” in their home for as long as possible. With the help of her oldest daughter Debbie, they spent tireless hours doing all the things she had on her “to do list” at this house. In 2019, she made the difficult decision to sell her home and move to Edmonds, WA to be closer to Debbie. This two-story home with a view of the snowy Olympic Mountains and Puget Sound was a dream come true. She dove in full speed ahead ordering new furniture, fabrics, and various accent pieces to make her vision come alive. It is with great sadness that Jeanne’s time was cut short living only 15 months in her new home before she was able to complete her decorating vision. Jeanne’s talents were vast and endless. She was an accomplished seamstress creating lavish costumes for the local Bellevue ice skating club shows in the 1960’s. This skill also came in handy when her daughters needed school costumes, Halloween costumes and the many band uniforms. Jeanne’s greatest love was that of music. She began playing the organ as a young girl in the church she and her family attended in La Junta. Over the years Jeanne continued to practice and hone her skills. A fond family memory from the 1970’s , was while vacationing on the family boat at the Rosario Resort in the San Juan Islands of Washington. Jeanne had the opportunity to play the large pipe organ. Unbeknownst to her, the staff had turned on the speakers allowing the guests at the resort to hear her play the hymns she had once played at her church. The sounds of cheers, clapping and boat horns echoed throughout the resort and harbor. As technology progressed, Jeanne did as well by purchasing many electronic keyboards and taking her music with her wherever she went. Together Jeanne and Reid (an accomplished trumpet player) would perform Christmas concerts at the Thousand Trails Campground in LaConnor, WA. They also played many seasonal programs to the delight of the guests. In December of 2018, Debbie (also an accomplished trumpet player) pulled off the surprise of Jeanne’s lifetime by performing on stage with her harp playing idol, Bronn Journey, at his annual Christmas concert. Jeanne had a great love and affection for animals. For Mother’s Day one year, her youngest daughter Linda gave her a puppy named “Tawny” as a gift. Knowing Jeanne would never turn down a gift, Linda got the puppy she had always wanted. As Jeanne’s daughters grew up and moved on into the world and Tawny’s passing, she would welcome her beloved Golden Retrievers “Meg” & “Ginger” into their home followed by Reid’s dog “Bella” and then “Gracie”. Jeanne’s love for animals lead her to become a volunteer with the Bellevue Humane Society for many years. She would participate in fund raising events for the shelter, was a huge advocate for collecting pet food distributed to community members in need, and played the role of Mrs. Claws at the Christmas With Santa photo event. Jeanne will be remembered for her big heart, always striving forward even when life threw adversity at her. In June of 2021 on Reid and Jeanne’s 67th wedding anniversary, they will be interred together at the Tahoma National Cemetery in Washington with military honors. When Reid passed away in January 2016, it was very important to Jeanne that a scholarship fund be set-up in his name at Oklahoma State University. Education was very important to both of them. The Reid R. June Endowed Scholarship in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering is the name of the fund if you wish to make a memorial donation. Jeanne is survived by her two daughters Debbie Dawson (Tom), Linda Bedell (Kim), her sister Shirley Bennett (Martin) and her beloved Jack Russell Terrier “Gracie”.
