Edith L. Belmont Obituary

Edith Belmont, daughter of the late Rufus and Elsie Handy, was born December 22, 1935 in Selbyville, Delaware. On Thursday, November 11, 2020 after a short illness, Edith departed this earthly life to spend eternity with the LORD Jesus Christ. Edith received her education in the Sussex County school system, later leaving school and getting a job to help her mother raise her sisters. She worked for 23 years at Cargill Inc., retiring in 1981 to care for her mother. On April 17, 1954, Edith was united in Holy Matrimony to the late Ernest Belmont, Sr. To this union was born four children, Marjorie Ellen, Robert Allen, Denise Ann and Ernest Belmont, Jr. Edith was an active member of Zoar United Methodist Church, Selbyville, Delaware where she served in the Roy Moore Gospel Choir, Senior Choir, Tuesday morning telephone ministry, and Nursing Home Outreach Ministry. She enjoyed serving where she could in the church. Several years ago, she initiated a Christmas Club for ZOAR members only. Edith was amazed to see it grow from five members to almost twenty members. Edith loved the LORD and her favorite song "I Wont Complain" captured how she conquered the many challenges in her life. Although Edith wasnt privileged to complete her education, God rewarded Edith with His favor by blessing her descendants…three of her children completed college and two secured their masters degrees; six of her grandchildren and great grandchildren graduated from college, four secured their masters degree; in addition five of them served in the United States Military. All her life Edith was the "energy, liveliness, enjoyment" of gatherings-church, family, friends, trips. She enjoyed visiting family in New Jersey, North Carolina and Washington, D.C., as well as participating in annual bus trips and vacations. The best way to lovingly describe "Mommy, Mother Dear, Mom-Mom E, Grand Mom, GMom, Edith" was the original "Medea." The family always said, "Tyler Perry should sit with her for one week…he would automatically make her his Medea!" Although she had a serious side, with her gift of laughter and storytelling, Edith could turn your tears of sadness into tears of overflowing laughter. Edith has left precious memories to last several lifetimes! We thank God that He choose Edith to put sparkle, effervescence, and love into our lives! She loved receiving flowers and had a green thumb yet left the gardening to her late husband! In addition to her husband, son and parents, Edith is preceded in death by two sisters: Christine Townsend and Deborah Golphin, a cousin-sister, Laura Beckett, her two sister in laws, Betty Pitts, and Regina Belmont and granddaughter Ebony. Edith loved and was very proud of her family. She leaves to cherish her memory: children Rev. Marjorie Belmont-Burns of Lewes, DE, Robert (Brenda) of Paterson, New Jersey, Denise Spencer (Bruce) of Orange , New Jersey; two grandsons whom she and her late mother and husband raised as their sons: Rodney "Hotshot" of South Carolina, Seneca of Millsboro, DE. Eight additional grandchildren, Renata (Patrice), Jamel (Chrisshauna), Yolanda, Noelle, Scott (Crista), Katina (Calvin), Carter (Michael), Brittany (Michael). Sixteen great grandchildren, Isia, Starr, Donte, Satwan, Andrea, Jazmine, Alyza, Cailyn, Cameron, Alexis, Kayin, Riley, Akira, Brook, Ava and Naomi. Two great-great grandsons, Isia, Jr. and Ayden; one sister Ruth Dorsey, nieces, Nora Lee Smith, Ann Smith, brother-in law, Enoch Golphin, a host of special nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and "her Group"(you know who you are).
