Obituary

Marlene “Marty” Sue Forgey, 84, of Redfield, SD, passed away Sunday, November 15, 2020, at Avantara in Redfield.  Her memorial service will held at a later date with burial at the Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, SD.  Arrangements have been entrusted to Hyke Funeral Home of Redfield.  (www.hykefuneralhome.com)

On July 26, 1936, Marlene Sue Olson was born on the family farm in Veblen, SD to Clarence and Olga (Hoines) Olson.  Marty was the oldest of four children (Clarence Jr., Meloy, and Curtis).  Marty graduated high school as Salutatorian in 1954 and went on to Northern State Teachers College in Aberdeen, SD.  She taught elementary school in both Minnesota and South Dakota the following years.  Marty met her husband, Ken Forgey in 1959, during her teaching career.  Ken and Marty had two children, Scott and Mary Beth.  Marty was blessed with four grandchildren (Trisha, Brittney, Bryce, and Brianna) and five great-grandchildren (Dylan, Mason, Adrian, Casen, and Brynlee).

Marty owned her own business during their time in Texas until she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 1992.  Marty donated her time to the nursing home over the years, until 2012 when they became her extended family.

Marty was a lover of life and never met a stranger.  Once you met Marty, you were a life-long friend.  She continued to reminisce about fond memories of her friends and family in her final days in the hospital.  The best of times for Marty were when she was able to be with her family and friends.  She always looked forward to the 4th of July, which became an annual tradition for gathering as a family.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Olga (Hoines) Olson; brothers: Meloy Olson and Curtis Olson; and granddaughters:  Trisha Whitley and Brianna Castleberry.

Survivors include her husband, Kenneth Forgey of Redfield; son Scott (Diane) Forgey of Redfield; daughter Mary Beth Castleberry of Mesquite, TX; grandchildren:  Brittney Castleberry of Elmo, TX and Bryce Castleberry of Mesquite, TX; and great-grandchildren:  Dylan, Mason, and Adrian Whitley of Redfield; and Casen and Brynlee Castleberry of Mesquite, TX.  She is also survived by her brother Clarence Jr. (Sandra) Olson; sisters-in-law:  Marion Olson and Jan Olson; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Many thanks to the staff at Avantara Redfield for the compassionate care given to Mom over the past eight years.
