Michael Anthony Capers was born January 25, 1962 in Hartsville, South Carolina, the fourth son and the sixth child of the late Booker T. Capers and Marie King Capers. He was educated at what was formerly known as the Thad E. Saleeby Disability Center. He remained in Hartsville until 2003 when he moved to Durham, North Carolina and for a brief period attended the Rainbow 66 Storehouse. Although Michael lived with aphasia, he possessed an exuberant personality and a memorable laugh. He loved music, movies, and the outdoors in general, often enjoying very brisk walks. He found joy assisting with meal preparations and never failed to greet a visitor with a wave. We cannot overstate the profound impact that Michael, a man who could not speak had on our lives and the lives of those who knew him. How Michael lived with his disability taught us many lessons. He let us reimagine and appreciate what the difference in others looks like and how it is lived among us. Michael will live in our hearts forever, and the memories of him and his life will continue to enlighten us each and every day. Michael was preceded in death by his loving parents, Booker T. Capers, Sr. and Marie King Capers and his oldest brother, Booker T, Capers, Jr. Surviving to cherish his memories are his siblings, Linda Capers of Durham, NC, Miriam Capers of Waldorf, MD, Garry Capers of Charlotte, NC, Richard Capers, Sr. and Carol Capers both of Brooklyn, NY; his aunt, Viola Capers of Hartsville, SC; his step-grandmother, Mary King of Charlotte, NC and her children, Luther King of Hartsville, SC, Theola Scott, Rev. Janice Smith, and Lillie Wyman all of Charlotte, NC: his nieces and nephews, Andre Ingram of Waldorf, MD, Janet Cary of Newark, NJ, Donielle Capers, Kimberly Capers, and Richard Capers, Jr. all of Brooklyn, NY as well as a host of cousins, family and dear friends.
