Dorothy Louise Warnick Obituary

Dorothy Louise “Dot” Warnick, 89, of New Germany, MD, passed away peacefully at home, on November 11, 2020, with her daughter, Tamra Warnick at her side. Born in Vale Summit, MD, on April 10, 1931, she was the daughter of the late Anton and Theresija (Likar) Urbas. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William “Mahlon” Warnick of 67 years and by her six sisters, and four brothers with two sisters still surviving. Dorothy was known to many as “Dot” as she managed the working farm in New Germany for over 69 years while being a housewife and partner to her late husband William “Mahlon” Warnick. She was a graduate of Beall High School in Frostburg where she majored in the secretarial curriculum. In her early years, she worked as both a server and bookkeeper for Hardesty’s Hilltop Diner with her older late sister and her late husband, Helen (Urbas) and Guy Hardesty. Dot and Mahlon were married in 1952 and began working and managing the former Fresh family farm in the New Germany area where they raised chickens, Yorkshire hogs and Angus and Charolais beef cattle. For many years, they sold products via an egg, meat and produce route run by Mahlon’s father and mother, Willie and Virgie Warnick and worked jointly with Mahlon’s late brother, Edwin “Bright” Warnick and wife, Carol (McKenzie) Warnick and their large dairy farm. Dot and Mahlon sold yearly herds of feeder cattle and hogs to local farmers and auction houses as they produced some of the herds locally while her husband Mahlon worked full-time in tire production at the Kelly Springfield Tire Plant in nearby Cumberland. Dot was a lifelong member of the Trinity United Church of Christ, New Germany, where she served as deaconess, and taught Sunday school while assisting the church elders and members with events, food functions and fundraisers. Anyone who knew her, would say she was one of the members of the Greatest Generation who met all challenges and lived the American dream of the pursuit of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. There were few tasks she could not do, from cooking to farming to fence fixing to moving farm products to doctoring animals in her daily chores. Of all her accomplishments, she was most proud of the transformation of the farm, the renovation of the farmhouse and working operations of the farm known as Walnut Acres, and especially her children and grandchildren, cherishing every moment with them and building a loving and warm household over the years. She was a steadfast listener, eager to share her opinion, and held a wonderful memory of all things great and small. She was an avid reader and understood and followed all local, regional and national news stories. She loved and enjoyed watching her children and grandchildren play sports and perform in musical and band shows while she followed many local and regional sport teams. Dot and Mahlon enjoyed country music, traveling weekly to Appalachia Park in West Virginia and Rocky Gap State Park to attend live country western musical shows while listening to RFD TV and polka; music and entertainment shows at home. She spoke and understood the Slavic language as she was raised in a large Urbas family who settled in the Vale Summit area in the early 1900’s. Dot was best known for her cooking abilities and annually prepared well over 40 poticas for friends and family and carried on many of the cooking and family festivities of both the large and loving Urbas and Warnick families. Anyone who had the pleasure of knowing her would tell you she could cook and work with the best of them and everyone loved her poticas, cherry and peach pies, coconut delight and many special recipes. She was indeed a “tough lady” surviving multiple life threatening challenges over the last 30 years, but always alert and engaging right up to her final days. Dot is survived by her loving daughter, Tamra Warnick, who provided 24/7 health care for both her and husband, Mahlon, in their final years and her oldest son, Rod Warnick and wife, Deb; grandson, Ben and wife, Lauryn (Bennett) Warnick, and great-grandson, Mackson Warnick; and grandson, Matt Warnick and wife, Brenna (Bean) Warnick. She is survived by two sisters, older sister, Antoinette “Nettie” and late husband William Kelly and younger sister, Elizabeth “Libby” and husband, Robert McKinley, III; and sister-in-law, Juanita (Madigan) Urbas. Proceeding her in death were older brothers, Anton and wife, Mary (Sivic) Urbas; Frank and wife, Helen (Wills) Urbas; John Urbas; and William and wife, Agnes (Devlin) Urbas; and sisters, Anne and husband, Clement Stakem; Rose and husbands, John McGowan and Thomas Stakem; Mary and husbands, George Patterson and Gerald McKenzie; Jane and husband, Bernard Michaels; Helen and husband, Guy Hardesty; and Margaret and husband, Levi Arnold. She is survived by in-laws, Jan Warnick, wife of the late Arch Warnick; Jack Warnick and wife, Rosalie; Larry Warnick and wife, Nancy; and Wilda Englehart and husband, Bill; Sheila McKenzie and husband Fred and sister-in-law, Carol Warnick, wife of the late Edwin Bright Warnick; along with many nieces, nephews and other extended family members. Special “Thank You’s” from the family are extended to Carol Warnick and her daughter, Pam and husband, Mark Pfaff, who helped and daily called on her in these final years and the supportive care of Jack and Rosaline Warnick and all the surviving members of the Warnick and Urbas families who regularly checked in on her and lifted her spirits in these final years. A special “Thank You” to Mike and Mark Beachy and family who maintained and worked the farm and preserved the out buildings for both Mahlon and Dot and the members of the Trinity United Church of Christ who cared passionately for Dot and especially the nurses who helped her in her last few days - - Stephanie, Traci, Grace, Katie and Jennifer of the Hospice of Garrett County. Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic a private burial and family service will be held at the Trinity United Church of Christ, New Germany MD, at a date to be determined. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may be directed to Trinity United Church of Christ Cemetery Fund, c/o Helen Oester, Treasurer, 1735 Lower New Germany Rd., Grantsville, MD 21536.
