Glen Allen John DeShaw Obituary

Glen Allen John DeShaw was born July 28, 1949 in Seattle, WA. He passed away on Saturday, January 14, 2017 in Des Moines, WA at the age of 67. Glen was diagnosed with liver cancer in February of 2016. He now will get to meet his brother Dale who died as an infant before Glen was born and join his parents Jesse (Hap) DeShaw and Helen Irene Stroup as well as his well-loved in-laws Don and Evelyn Young, Rebeccas parents and brother-in-law Stephen Young. He will also get to romp and play with Ginger his first medical alert dog who saved his life more than once. He is survived by his wife Rebecca of 44 years; daughters Jessica Overton and Jennifer DeShaw; two grandchildren Eion and Emma and assorted extended family and friends. Glens family lived in the Ballard area of Seattle all his growing up life but he did not stay in one place. Glen joined the Navy traveling to California, Virginia and various ports on the East Coast, Cuba, the Caribbean and the Mediterranean. He met Rebecca Sue Young in 1964 when they were both 15. Although they did not date, but rather did things with the youth group at First (United) Methodist Church in Seattle, they did eventually become a couple and married March 18, 1972. Glen and Rebecca laughed that Glen never actually asked Rebecca to marry him. Much of their courtship was via mail as Glen was in the Navy. Talk had moved from If we get married to when we get married during this letter writing. On a weekend leave the couple went for a walk. Sitting on the beach at Lincoln Park in Seattle the conversation went like this: Glen: .when we get married.. Rebecca: Wait a minute. What makes you think I am going to marry you? Glen: Well you are arent you? Rebecca: I suppose so Glen: as I was saying Rebecca: Wait a minute. Does this mean we are engaged? Glen: I guess so Rebecca: OK I think we should tell people that we are engaged Glen: OK And the rest, as they say, is history! During their 44 years of marriage they lived in 8 states; Virginia, California, Oregon, Maryland, Wisconsin, New Mexico, Georgia, and for three months in the RV in Texas, some more than once, moving many times. Best loved for the weather and environment were Southeast New Mexico and the Tracy, CA area but family was centered in the Greater Seattle area. Glen attended Ballard High School graduating in 1966. Glen graduated with a BA in History from the University of Washington later receiving an MDiv from Nashotah House in Wisconsin. He expressed an interest in serving the church at 17 but was encouraged to try everything else first so worked in Quality Assurance after his Naval service for many years. Later he was a relationship manager, basically customer service but interacting with company executives rather than users, a case manager for an organization serving the homeless and pastoral assistant before finally attending Seminary and being ordained priest in the Episcopal Church. He served as rector at St. Thomas Becket in Roswell, NM and St. Pauls in Artesia, NM. Later he was priest in charge at St. Lukes in Elma, WA, and priest in residence serving at St. Johns in Olympia, WA, St. Johns in Kirkland, WA, and St. Columbas in Kent, WA. His career as a priest only spanned 11 years but it encompassed and colored his entire life. Health issues, which eventually led to the below knee amputation of his right leg, led to medical retirement. During their early retirement years Glen and Rebecca traveled about in their RV, as RV Ministries, serving the RV community and others they encountered in their travels. Glen had eclectic tastes in both food and music! He sang and played guitar and spent many years playing viola after playing violin briefly. His tastes where also eclectic in reading. A favorite book The Probability Broach by L. Neil Smith reflected much of his political views. He was more or less active in politics always having a reasoned response to questions concerning his point of view. He may be best remembered for his willingness to discuss anything in a calm and reasoned way even religion. He greatly enjoyed the many study groups he led or in which he participated. His sense of humor was always present.
