Dorothy Jeanne Riggs Obituary

Dorothy Jeanne Riggs, 83, of rural Marshall, IL, passed away on October 29, 2020, following a short stay at Signature Health Care in Terre Haute, IN. She was born October 14, 1937, at home in Metcalf, IL, a village in Young America Township, Edgar County, IL. She grew up all over the area before ending up in Marshall, where she graduated from high school before marrying Burton Joe Riggs on July 6, 1958. She would eventually find employment as a secretary at Velsicol Chemical in Marshall, where she worked for several years before becoming a cosmetologist. After retiring from the beauty salon business, she and Burton bought and cleared land in Cheifland, FL, where they would spend their winters for the next 30 years. Though she enjoyed the Florida weather, she was always ready and eager to come back home to spend time with her sons' families. By all accounts, Dorothy took the role of grandma very seriously and was, indeed, the best grandma ever. When she was able, she found great satisfaction working with her hands, be that crocheting, quilting, or oil painting. She was also a great lover of music, and was known to sing alongside her husband and attend square dances when she had the chance. If you were fortunate enough to spend any length of time with Dorothy, it didn't take long to realize that she was a woman who took her faith very seriously. Though she was a longtime member of the West Union First Baptist Church, it was her generous, life-giving love that pointed to her Savior. We are thankful that her faith has been made sight, and that today, she is experiencing the glory of Christ alongside her beloved husband, Burton Joe Riggs; son, Joseph "Joe" Riggs; mother, Gladys (Higginbotham) Garver; and sister, Grace Louise (Thompson) Garver. She is survived by her son & daughter-in-law, Terry & Cathy Riggs (Olney, IL); by four grandchildren, Jerry Jacob "JJ" & Adrianna Riggs (Greenwood, IN), Kimberly Dawn & Ryan Pinkston (West Union, IL), Bobbi Jo Riggs & Doug Tuttle (West Union, IL), and Andrew "Andy" Riggs (West Union, IL); by five great-grandchildren, Addison Grace Pinkston, Grayson Wesley Pinkston, Jaedlynn Jo Riggs, Jozey Michelle Riggs, and Elena Diane Riggs; by her brother, Everett Max & Dianna Thompson (Marshall, IL); by her beloved dogs, Java and Able; by several nieces and nephews; as well as her daughter-in-law, Sara Riggs, who she considered "the daughter she never had." For the past three years, Sara took it upon herself to care for her mother-in-law, and could attest to the fact that hardly a day went by that didn't see Dorothy requesting to go home. We find peace in knowing that on Thursday, she did just that. A public visitation will be held from 9:00-11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 4th at the Prust-Hosch Funeral Home in West Union. Due to the newly-increased public safety measures being enforced by the State of Illinois, the family will not be in attendance in an effort to keep the number of people gathered to under 25. Please note that social distancing measures will be in place, and that it will be required that all visitors wear face coverings while in the building. Memorials may be made to the "West Union First Baptist Church", with envelopes available at the funeral home. Though the current restrictions prevent the public from attending her funeral service in-person, a live stream of her service will be available starting at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday. This can be done on Goodwine Funeral Homes' Facebook page or by going to https://www.goodwinefuneralhomes.com/live-stream/live-stream. Burial will be in the Ohio Cemetery.
