Douglas Roy Mitts

Douglas R. Mitts, 72, Reeds, Missouri, passed away Friday morning, October 30, 2020 at Mercy Hospital, Joplin, Missouri. Doug was born on July 5, 1948 in Carthage, MO to the late Lewis R. Mitts and Effie (Goodman) Mitts. He was a 1966 graduate of Carthage High School. He married Ann Hornback on August 30, 1991 in Miami, Oklahoma. She preceded him in death on October 21, 2017. Doug served in the National Guard and was honorably discharged. Doug was a retired rural mail carrier. He loved the outdoors, was an avid gardener, always ready to go fishing and enjoyed sharing his bounty with family and friends. Doug loved to invite people over for a cookout and was famous for fried fish, macaroni and cheese and his biscuits and gravy. Survivors include two sons, Jeff Stout (Melinda), Reeds, Missouri, and Jonathan Stout (Jana), Joplin, Missouri; two brothers, Robert L Mitts, DVM (Jean) of Holt, MO and G.E. “Pete” Mitts (Lois) of Savannah, MO; nine grandchildren, Ethan Wiggin, Brett Stout (Kennedy), Azia Smith, Nathan Ayers, Arkell Smith, Kasie Stout, Clay Stout, Grayson Stout, and Gabriella Stout; and three great-grandchildren. Also survived by three nephews, Miles Mitts (Holly) Savannah, MO, Nathan Mitts, DVM (Amanda) Ocala, FL, Justin Mitts, St. Joseph, MO; one niece, Jennifer Kjellsen, Golden, CO; and 7 great-nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by one daughter, Sharon Stout, one grandchild and one great-grandchild. Visitation will be held on Friday, November 20, 2020 from 6-7 pm at Knell Mortuary, Carthage. Private family services will be held at a later date at Avilla Cemetery, Reeds, MO. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts are suggested to the Isaiah Wiggin Memorial Fund in care of Carthage YMCA, 2600 Grand Ave, Carthage, MO 64836, or to the Avilla Cemetery Fund.
