Shirley Stoutsenberger Obituary

SHIRLEY RENEE CHASE STOUTSENBERGER July 28, 1929 to October 27, 2020 Shirley Renee Chase Stoutsenberger, 91, passed away peacefully at her home in Elk Ridge, Utah, on October 27, 2020, at 3:33 a.m., with her sweetheart holding her hand and surrounded by her children. We miss her from the deepest depths of our hearts but rejoice in her passing to a place where she will join a great family reunion and continue blessing lives. Shirley was born July 28, 1929, at 2:22 a.m. in Los Angeles, California, to Sisson Earl and Loretta Thorpe Chase, the third of seven children. Shirley met her sweetheart when she was only 12 years old when Marvin Edward Stoutsenberger became friends with her two older brothers. They were married and sealed for time and all eternity on June 5, 1948 in the St. George Temple. Throughout over 72 years of marriage, they worked alongside each other as loving companions to raise their family of four children to be obedient children of God and then making a huge impact on the lives of their 33 grandchildren, 90 great-grandchildren, and 7 great-great-grandchildren. Shirley is a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and joyed in her lifelong commitment to family and was dedicated to genealogy and family reunions, both to generations with family here and in Heaven. Shirley served with her sweetheart on a full-time mission in the Jacksonville Florida Mission in 1994 and 1995. Her lifetime of service in the Church included as a Temple ordinance worker for many years, and in Primary, Sunday School, Young Women (MIA) and Relief Society. But where Shirley really shined was as a consultant at the Family History Center and as the ward building librarian. She was a master of organization and could help “put everything in its place.” She was the “go-to” person when someone needed help seeking out their ancestors or needed something for their lesson. Since her young childhood, Shirley helped her father alongside her brothers with the family business, Chase’s Appliance in Los Angeles, an appliance sales and repair business established by her father in 1923. As an adult, she spent many long days working to help her brothers after her father passed away and only quit to follow her family to Provo, Utah. In Utah, she worked at Signetics in Orem and Sears Parts Department in Provo until she retired. Shirley loved the outdoors and loved camping (in tents) and then, starting in 1965, they started traveling across-country in their camper, taking in Church history and U.S. history sites. They went on the Church History Tour at least four times with family. Later, they bought 5 acres of cabin property near Fruitland, Utah, and three generations worked together building the family cabin. There are many fond memories at the cabin and include not only five generations of family and extended family, but also include the “Fifties Group,” their friends from the Manchester Ward that they spent their teenage years and having fun with as young married couples. She especially loved the Christmas in July family reunions at the cabin and made sure everyone had fun and that no one felt left out, even with five generations in attendance. A self-confessed “ice creamaholic” and a “Shirley Temple Fan-atic,” she has every bit of Shirley Temple memorabilia, dolls, books, movies, etc., you could possibly get your hands on and, as many people will remember, had many ice cream eating contests, even giving the young missionaries a run for their money. Over the years, Shirley lived in Los Angeles for her first 20 years of life, and then in Compton, Gardena, Torrance, and Lomita, California, living in each home for about eight years. In 1977, they moved to Provo, Utah, where they lived until December 2017 when they moved into a home in Elk Ridge, Utah, with Dennis and his sweet wife Valorie. Shirley taught us how to give and receive service. She pointed us toward our Savior in word and deed. Shirley was generous with everything she had to give, almost to a fault. If it was within her means and power to give, she would give it. Shirley is survived by her husband of 72+ years, Marvin, four children, Darryl (Laurie), Charlene, Dennis (Valorie), and Cheryl Brown (Steve), 29 grandchildren, 90 great-grandchildren, 7 great-great-grandchildren, brother James and his wife Carol, sisters-in-law Mildred (John), Joann (Robert), Renae (Doug), and numerous adoring nieces and nephews. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, five siblings and inlaws (John, Robert, Douglas, Earlene and husband Joe Carter, and Kenneth and wife Gloria), daughter-in-law Connie, and four grandchildren. Family and friends are invited to gather for a viewing at the WalkerSanderson Funeral Home, 646 East 800 North in Orem, Utah, on Sunday, November 1, 2020, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. A short viewing starting at 10:00 a.m., at the Grandview 7th Ward building, 1120 North 850 West in Provo, Utah, will precede the funeral services on Monday, November 2, 2020, to begin at 11:00 a.m. The funeral services will be streamed live by going to www.WalkerSanderson.com, live webcast in the drop-down menu, and Shirley Chase Stoutsenberger funeral.
